HELP! should I wake dd during the night to give medicine for a temp?

DD aged 2.2 was sent home from nursery today with a temp. within an hour of getting home and having calpol, she was her usual self, chattering , playing and eating. she had a cooler bath than normal and then went to bed as usual. i have just been up and taken her temp and it is high again. i woke her and gave her more calpol; she seemed to be fine, chattering away again, and i turned off the ehating and took her covers off. her temp is now coming down, but do i leave her to sleep it off or should i set my alarm for the middle of the night to wake her and give her nurofen/calpol?

any advice would be most welcome. TIA

Yes, it's better to keep on top of it and wake her up. She'll go back to sleep.

Well, a temp is the body's way of fighting an infecrion. So if she's able to sleep through it undisturbed I'd leave it

Agree with nnb.
Only reason to treat a temp is if it is making them feel miserable - if asleep then by definition not a prob.

Agree with Phantom. My DD used to have febrile convulsions so I set the alarm for every 4 hours to check and then give her the medicine. Hope she gets better soon.

Maybe check it to make sure it's not too high. If it's high then give ibuprofen as it works faster than paracetamol. If it's not too bad leave and let her body get on with it. Always check for a rash though.

I agree with nnb. If the temperature isn't causing her to wake up then let her sleep. She will need as much rest as possible.

ah, a divided opinion! But thanks ofr your advice! will go and check for a rash now, hadn't thought about it to be quite honest as she seemed ok in herself.

Don't wake her to do it.

Unless she has a condition like febrile convolusions the temp is not usually dangerous and willhelp her to get over infection quicker.

Take the meds to bed with you and if she wakes herself then give her some. If not leave her.

No, sleep is better than any fever suppressant.. but I would watch, but you're doing that anyway.

olivo · 14/11/2008 22:19

thanks. i have been and checked for a rash and taken her vest off so she's now just in pjs and no quilt. she is remarkably perky, just asked to go in my bed ( she knows i'll say no!), had a drink of water and then asked for a princess story, but the temp is still high.
I think we'll compromise on leaving the bedroom doors open and giving her nurofen if she wakes and cries out.thanks again for all your help.I love MN!
