I'm normally 110/70, even during all my three pregnancies.

Today it was 150/94

should I be worried?

Also, can high blood pressure bring on physical symptoms of anxiety or can anxiety/worry bring on high blood pressure? Chicken and egg sort of thing??? Or is there no connection whatsoever?

Are you pregnant now ?

Why did they take your blood pressure at the gym ? (confused.com)

HeinzSight · 14/11/2008 14:42

No I'm not pregnant now. I joined the gym today.

As far as I know, anxiety can raise BP. But I think it is far, far more likely that the machine at the gym is dodgy. Variations in BP measurements between different equipment and different 'measurers' are significant (in research studies, anyway). GPs need 3 high in a row before they start to worry.

ilovemydogandPresidentObama · 14/11/2008 14:45

No - don't worry. Gym staff are not as trained as medical staff, and it was taken for exercise purposes iyswim

Ask your midwife for an appt if worried

HeinzSight · 14/11/2008 14:45

she took it three times to check.

I didn't get much sleep last night because I was worried about leaving DD in the creche amongst other things. Could that have caused it?

should get it checked again at GP....

ilovemydogandPresidentObama · 14/11/2008 14:45

Oh, sorry. You're not pregnant.

Ask GP if worried...

DH was a fitness instructor in a previous incarnation. He used to do the new member checks. At 150 he would have written a programme to suit somebody with raised bp to be on the safe side and checked their blood pressure for the first few visits to try and see if it was an anomoly or accurate. He would also have passed you over to the gym's nutritionist. Higher than this he would recommend a trip to the doc and same if the bp didn't come down any after any needed dietary changes and following a fitness programme.

stanosauruswrecks · 14/11/2008 14:48

What were you doing before you had your BP checked? Ideally you should be sat for about 5 minutes before having it checked, and not have had any caffine or cigarettes for 30 minutes before. If you'd just sprinted up from the changing rooms then I wouldn't be too worried, but maybe make an appointment with your practice nurse to put your mind at rest

WingsofaAngel · 14/11/2008 14:51

I see now. Blood pressure can fluctuate depending. Stress can be a factor.

If you are at all worried get the practice nurse to take it for you.

ShowOfHands · 14/11/2008 14:51

Should add that dh would also have asked many other questions about your general health and would have written a programme for you only if you had no other warning signs.

He said they were always taught that 150ish was a grey area as it could be high bp but it's possible to be within the realms of normal if you're anxious or have been rushing. Hence lots of other questions and them keeping an eye on it at first.

He also said to see your gp if worried anyway.

HeinzSight · 14/11/2008 14:52

Had been rushing around like mad getting kids ready for school, DD ready for creche (her first time), me mentally prepared to leave her there, bp taken within an hour of a cup of coffee too. The lady taking bp was also having a conversation with me, to which I had to join in with.. was sure you were supposed to not speak when having bp taken?

Ask your GP if you're worried. It's 3 times on 3 occasions, not one after the other ('cos that can just be repeating with the same stressed you / dodgy calibration of machine / unskilled operator).

HeinzSight · 14/11/2008 14:54

thanks everyone x

Blinkin' heck, I insist on absolute silence when I'm taking BPs otherwise I can't hear a thing, but then I am deaf as a post! (and use an old fashioned sphyg, not one of those new fangled digital jobs!) I would make an appointment with your practice nurse - that way you can get an accurate measurement, and in the unlikely situation that it is on the high side, she'll be able to point you in the right direction to get it down.
From what you've said, it's likely to be related to the fact that you were rushing about, and concerned about DD, but it'll not hurt to check it out.

cheshirekitty · 14/11/2008 15:04

I had my BP taken at the gym. It was 165/105. I knew it had to be wrong, so insisted she took it again. This time it was 130/85.

I got it taken again with a good old fashioned sphyg (work in a hospital,so one of my colleagues took it) and it was 120/65.

Just have your bp checked by your practice nurse.
