DD keeps wailing this, poor little thing. What can I do? Calamine lotion is not doing a thing and we're Calpoled to the max. Help!

my ds and dd loved to soak in a bath with bicarbonate of soda in it. think the bicarb is an old wives tale but it did soothe them. they used to have 2 or 3 baths a day. also used a cream that was calamine and witch hazel which was cooling on their skin.

Cheers for that - am off to my local pharmacy so will ask for it. I did a search on chicken pox itch and someone else suggested Eurax. Does anyone know if this works??
Someone I know suggested Piriton syrup - is this a good idea?
She is desperate with the pain - couldn't sleep till past midnight with it and up again crying at 6.30..........

rhus tox is a good remedy as well for chickenpox.

yoyo · 14/03/2005 09:56

Gave both mine Piriton and it seemed to help. Also did lots of bicarb baths. Calamine didn't seem to help much. Mine had it during the Summer so I let them wander about naked too - think it is particularly itchy when you are hot.

Piriton made my dd drunk! Not sleepy drunk, but merry .

Eurax seemed to help but is messy and doesn't smell too nice.

How about junior Nurofen as well as the Calpol? The anti inflammatory action may be beneficial.

Cha · 14/03/2005 10:20

I was thinking Nurofen but someone told me that paracetamol was better for the pox. However, I will use it in an hour or so as was told by NHS that you could alternate between the two for fevers, thereby getting more into them without maxing out on either - IYSWIM.
Bicarb does sound good - heard that it was good for nappy rash. Will check we still have some in the cupboard.
What is rhus tox?

we used an anti-histamine called 'phenigen' or something similar - can't remember the exact name - stopped the itching and did make ds feel better and knocked him out! He doesn't like the taste of medisaid, so we could 'phenigen'and calpol at bedtime. I bought it over the counter as the chemist. hope your dd gets better soon.

This is all wonderful stuff. Have written a list, just waiting for dp to return so I can go out and get things. Am dreading ds getting it (he is 18 months) as at least with dd (3.5) we can reason and explain and tell her that it won't last forever. He will just be miserable and not able to understand why.

Hello - my dd's have just recovered from the pox - dd1 had it really bad and the best cream we found was 'tea tree and witch hazel' by Lanes. Bit smelly but stopped the itching more than any other. Eurax was useless for us afraid. Did give her Rhus Tox but not sure if it did any good - she liked the taste tho!! Piriton didn't have much affect after the first dose, nurse gave me another one which dd said was poison but seemed to work better - will have to go and look for the name tho.

Cha · 16/03/2005 15:58

Bought Eurax and Piriton. Dd said that Eurax worked but I think we had already gone past the worst and most of her spots were crusting up. Same with the Piriton too, no idea if it worked but it did send her to sleep which was great... Now waiting for ds to get it.

I had Chicken pox when pregnant with ds, and I can say bicarbonate baths really helped! (I found witch hazel made it more itchy btw.)

WigWamBam · 05/06/2007 14:40

Oatmeal baths are good - tie some oatmeal into an old sock or the foot of some old tights and swish it around in the bath.

Do double up on the ibuprofen and Calpol - even if one is better than the other, using the two together gives a longer period of pain relief.

Anti-histamine helps, we found Piriton syrup and Benadryl cream were really good.

And calamine cream is better than the lotion because the lotion can be drying, which makes the spots more itchy.
