Baby have you been diagnosed with diabetes?

My nana was diagnosed with it when she was 17 years old she is now 74 years old and although she has to watch what she eats, she is relitivly healthly. She has had to have a couple of lazer surgeries on her eyes, but both as day patients.
Nana contols it with tablets, so I am not sure what type of diabeties she has.

There are so many medical advances now and drugs to help you deal with diabeties are so much more advanced.

my 45 year old cousin has been insulin dependent since the age of six, and she hasn't lost anything yet.

baby - I am a diabetic too. Just make sure you eat the right things, take exercise, do not drink too much alcohol etc and you should be ok.

Are you on metformin? They tend to put people on that quicker then they used to do, and it does control the blood sugers.

Make sure you have your yearly kidney urine check, yearly eye check for retinopathy and yearly foot check.

Go on diabetes uk site. They will give you loads of info. I do not mind answering any questions you might have.

babyjjbaby · 09/11/2008 17:38

I am starting on insulin tomorrow since the baby is messing with my levels, but I have had excellent control with diet for 2 years.

Diabetes does not have to mean death or blindness or anything like that. You just have to be hyper aware of what you are eating.

babyjjbaby · 09/11/2008 17:49

how do u measur ethe insuling and can i ask what u eat in a day today i had some porridge for breakfast with a teaspoon of canderel lunch i had a roast dinner with beef a yorkshire pudding cabbage carrots and 4 dry roast pottaoes then i will probbaly have a sardine sandwhich for dinner but it will have to be white bread cos i haven't got any brown i have had 2 biscuits and a banana

I don't know how to measure insulin yet. I will be learning tomorrow.

As for what I eat, I have been given specific numbers of carbs to eat:

Breakfast 50
Snack 20
lunch 40
snack 10
dinner 60
snack 40

You need to read labels. I also bought a book that lists carbs in food. I think I paid £5 for it at M&S!

babyjjbaby · 09/11/2008 18:17

how do u know how much carbs are in something is that per 100g or something

OP posts:
Tee2072 · 09/11/2008 18:24

Read the labels. It will show both 100g and per serving, usually.

You need to read and do some calculations. There is no easy way to start, but it does get easier!

Are you seeing a doctor for your diabetes? Ask to meet with a Diabetes Educator and/or dietician. They will be able to help you.

babyjjbaby · 09/11/2008 18:25

Tee2072 · 09/11/2008 18:31

You really need to find a good book or a better dietician. Or better yet, trust what the dietician told you and just keep eating what you are eating. I am not an expert and cannot answer all of your questions.

bramblebooks · 09/11/2008 18:57

we have salter scales which you can get from argos. They are Salter Nutri-Weigh Dietary Computer Scale. They are totally brill and known in our house as 'the magic scales'. You put the food on and type in the name of it. It will come up with the carb value of the food. Great, especially since we've just had a roast!

You get the hang of the carb value of foods pretty quickly and are able to 'guesstimate' how much you are eating. Carbs in potatoes vary as to how they've been cooked - mash will make your levels shoot up, jacket potatoes are better as the fibre in the skin helps to keep things steady.

There is a collins gem book on carb values.

My son is type 1 diabetic and uses an insulin pump.

bramblebooks · 09/11/2008 18:58

I prefer this calorie counter to the carb counter book as it is easier to find what I'm looking for (it lists carbs as well as calories)

bramblebooks · 09/11/2008 18:58

... and looking back at your op title, yes you can! It's important to get your levels sorted though, as running high too much carries an increased risk of complications.

babyjjbaby · 09/11/2008 19:02

thanks i am not going to worry bout it i don't think i will be on insulin for a while as i am only on 1 tablet atm and it is always under 10 and averges between 4.4 and 5.5

OP posts:
babyjjbaby · 09/11/2008 19:07

why is it u can only have say 50g of carbs can't u have more and adjust the insulin

OP posts:
chipmonkey · 09/11/2008 19:39

babyjjbaby, I am am an optometrist and most diabetics I see have healthy eyes. Once the diabetes is well-controlled and nowadays control tends to be better, you would have difficulty telling a diabetic from a non-diabetic just by looking at the eyes. IME the worst cases of diabetic retinopathy seem to be in teenagers who want to be like their friends even if it means binge-drinking and junk food! My Mum is diabetic and a book she finds helpful is "The GI Diet" as it lists foods based on glycaemic index.

bramblebooks · 09/11/2008 21:42

babyjj, we match the insulin to the carbs, rather than the carbs to the insulin. My son eats a healthy diet and eats what he feels like eating. Talk to your dr/dietician about it.

babyjjbaby · 09/11/2008 21:47

ok thanks like i say i am not goign to worry bout it as i feel my diebetes is very well controlled on the tablet atm
