I went to the gp's the other day as I have been suffering from diarrhea for over 2weeks. In the last week I have started to feel nauseaous (most of the day, sometimes worse than others and lose my appitite)

I thought it might have been a side effect from an increase in dosage from my AD's but it didn't start immediately (and the nausea didn't satrt til last week)

Gp says it sounds like a classic case of IBS. I have an ugency to go in a.m. usually after eating. I have tummy cramps just beofre.

I have given a stool (sorry tmi) sample just to rule out an infection. Gp reakons I would be over it by nowe if it was.

I have been under an enormous amount of stress for a long time (won;t bore you) and that's why I'm on AD's.

It is a bit soon for your gp to say IBS imo. It is only IBS after other things have been ruled out. A stomach bug can temporarily irritate your gut and this would pass in a few weeks with the help of some loperamide.

My GP told me I'd got IBS without doing any tests for anything else. I keep hearing about how everything else should be ruled out first but I know plenty of people who were told they'd got IBS without checks for anything being done. What other things could it be?

BCNS · 08/11/2008 21:21

I got diagnosed with IBS after they had poked and prodded, taken a stack of blood.. put cameras up and down...!! to rule out everything else.

there are things you can do.. keep a food diary and score each day 1 - 10 good to bad.. also record stress levels each day.
Work on stress.. long haul I know.

drink plenty and take suppliments for the vitamins and minerals you might be missing.
GP should go through this with you.. tbh.

drugs wise from GP.. I take antiacids ( really strong ones).. anti sick pills.. anti squit pills.. buscopan.. colpamin (sp) for gas and cramps.
I also take multi vitamins and other suppliments.

The up shot is.. I still feel sick everyday.. still have stomach cramps .. but at least the pills make it so that I can actually get on with the day 90% of the day.

somedays are good tho

I saw a homeopath who made a massive difference. As well as the homeopathic remedy she suggested not eating too much wheat as it's difficult to digest & making sure I drink plenty. My GP suggested about 10 different medicines for the various symptoms & avoiding food that caused problems. Considering all food causes a problem when my IBS is bad I didn't think he was much help.

Just to add into the mix, I know two (medical) people who suffered from IBS, and both were cured by hypnotism. Not something I would normally recommend, yet they went in as complete skeptics but found it really worked.

walkinthewoods · 09/11/2008 09:43

Thanks for all of your replies. I did think it was a bit quick off the mark to suggest IBS but she did say it might well be this rather than defo.

I have been particularly bad this a.m. but have put some root ginger in hot water and it eases slightly. (Tis like being blardy pg)

I have noticed that drinking tea is a no-no now. I hardly ate anything yesterday. The thought of some foods just turns my stomach. Will keep a diary as suggested.

Also just wondering how many actually suffer from this nausea because that's the worst. I thought the trots were bad enough but the nausea is really pissing me off.

I used to sometimes suffer from nausea although a delightful combination of alternating constipation & diarrhoea are my main symptoms

steph29 · 09/11/2008 18:37

i suffered with ibs a few years ago and it went on for about 4 years but disappeared after i had my 2nd child. 3 years later upon hearing i have an ofsted inspection due (i'm a childminder) it's come back with a vengeance this weekend. I've had stomach cramps and so much gas i feel like i'm going to be sick, nausea and a major tension headache. Sometimes having a hot bath helps for me for a short time and i've just started taking buscopan which seems to be quite good.

triplets · 09/11/2008 23:10

I was told that is what I am suffering from, by my gp 4 weeks ago. I had a nagging pain, in my right side, slight constipation, she ran loads of blood tests and examined me inside and out! Put me on Colofac, went away for a while and is backwith a vengeance this w/end, feel very very fat around my middle and uncomfy generally. My husband was diagnosed with bowel and liver cancer in March so its been almost a year of hell, in fact he came out of hospital last Mon after having liver surgery. They blame the IBS on stress, now theres a surprise, esp as we have 10 yr old triplets!

Claire236 · 10/11/2008 17:50

I'm not surprised you're stressed triplets. Hope your husband is doing ok.

I've had it for years too. I've finally found chocolate is a huge trigger for 'upset' tummy, even a small cookie does. Heat and stress are other triggers for me. It's worth looking at your diet, if you can afford it you can get Yorktested as I did. Funny though they didn't show up chocolate! With me once something upsets it it takes week to settle down again.

Fllightthebluetouchpaper · 10/11/2008 18:27

I'm thinking I might have this too

Not sure, it could be as I had a bad infection over the summer and am having symptoms again. Hope it isn't nasty thing back again - it seems to go away then comes back when I am really stressed.

They're doing tests again to make sure. IMO IBS isn't normally diagnosed until other things are ruled out and you've had the problem for at least 3 months??

triplets · 10/11/2008 22:20

The older I get I firmly believe we under estimate stress and its affect on our bodies! When my son died in 1994 my periods stopped for two years. Then I had 2 goes at ivf, pumped full of hormones, then third attempt lightly different as I had donated eggs, result triplets just before my 46th birthday! Never had a full nights sleep since and now very sick husband and 3x`s 10 yr olds! I need to be pampered....ha ha!
