Is this normal for a little boy when urinating?

Not sure if I'm posting this in the right place but hope someone can come along and advise....
When ds (who is 3) urinates, his entire willy appears to fill up like a balloon. It's as though his foreskin is too narrow to let all the wee out at once. Dh says it's not usual for this to happen so I tought I'd post on here and see if anyone else has had a similar experience and whether it requires any medical attention (hope not for poor ds's sake).
Thanks.

No it's not and a sudden onset of this can be quite nasty - balanitis I think it's called

cositjustisok · 06/11/2008 16:30

Not sure if it is the same as my sons..but this did happen to him and he took quite a few infections down there also. I think I would pop along to your GP and have a chat about it jsut to put your mind at rest. Think as LIZS says it is balanitis...HTH

Has it always happened? This was what my ds was like, he is 6 now and has just been circumcised as the foreskin was too tight.

Scarfmaker · 06/11/2008 19:22

No I think balantis is a thrush type infection which produces a creamy discharge around the willy - my son had it a few times when young (he's 16 now).

Also I remember his willy used to fill up for a few seconds as he was taking his first flow so I don't think it's unusual but still get it checked out if you're worried.

mrsmaidamess · 06/11/2008 19:26

my friends ds had this and had to be circumcised

cheshirekitty · 06/11/2008 19:31

Could be the foreskin is too tight. Please go and see your GP.

My DS is 3 and his does balloon a bit when he first starts weeing but graduallt goes down theoughout the wee.
He's always been like that and has never had any infections or pain so I thought it was normal and would even out as he got bigger and his willy grew a bit more!

Exactly what happened to my ds, now aged 6 - no infections but you could see his foreskin was narrow and it used to get a bit red. When we asked him if he could gently pull it back he winced and couldn't do it and of course we weren't going to force it! The GP said leave it until he's 4 and then referred us to the hospital. The specialist advised leaving it till 6 or 7 because sometimes the foreskin loosens up naturally and if it's not getting infected it's best to avoid operations, obviously. Then he took a closer look, gave a gentle yank, my son went 'OOh! There's a purply bit!' in surprise not pain, and we realised it could be retracted after all. Now he has to remember to pull it back when weeing and when having a shower or bath, but only briefly and just to make sure it remains flexible, and all seems fine.

Thanks all. Actually asked GP while I was there for my 6 wk postnatal check this afternoon. She basically said what ermintrude13 says; that it should naturally loosen by the time he's 5.
