I put this in chat.. but would like it to last a bit longer.. just because you deserve the thank you..

Thank you for doing the jobs you do.. have just come out of hospital.. and have been struck by the hard work, dedication and the amount of crap and attention seeking you folk have to put up with..

Just wanted to let you know your all appreciated!

I'd like to add to this - I agree completely. Its a few years since I was last in hospital but thank-you to all the ambulance people who had to talk me through unwanted hospital trips! I'm sure they come across more objectionable people than me, but they were always lovely regardless of how stroppy I was.(I refuse to admit to being ill ever).

Thank-you also to the nursing staff who recognised me when I accompanied my mum for her second hip replacement even though it was 6 months after the first.

You all do a brilliant job under frequently impossible circumstances, so I think we should keep this thread bumped!

scaryfucker · 05/11/2008 16:55

I will say thank you on behalf of all the people working in the NHS.

We don't do it for the appreciation (feck knows, we would all have gotten out yrs ago if that were the case), but it is nice to receive it sometimes.

emma1977 · 05/11/2008 20:31

Ditto what SF said.

onepieceoflollipop · 05/11/2008 20:32

Yes ditto what sf said - but we do like chocolates too

TheGashlycrumbTinies · 05/11/2008 20:41

Aww, thanks!

Yep chocolates always good!

ScottishMummy · 05/11/2008 20:53

usually i am reticent to click any health related posts (expect it to be bad) but hey thanks

really many many people work hard
hca
medics
nurse
lab staff
admin
paramedics

and yes it is sense of vocation that keeps one there (most days)

tyketiler · 05/11/2008 21:02

great to receive thanks, but usually feeling you do a job that makes a difference, plus being interesting etc keeps you going.

BCNS · 06/11/2008 20:34

ahh thank you for the advice on choccies.. today I took some in to the ward I was on. Bless them they were quite shocked.!!

I am keeping this bumped with another thank you!

Thank-you! Everyone likes to feel appreciated but at the moment with all the political shenanigans, a NHS in dire straits, increasing violence (my doctor DH was beaten up at work last week) and verbal abuse becoming a normal part of my working day (the patients abusing me not the other way round ) it is the rare thanks that keeps me going and reminds me that we make a difference.

ScottishMummy · 07/11/2008 18:59

sorry to hear that about your husband,is he recovering (mentally/physically)really terrible

BCNS · 07/11/2008 19:49

ummadam.. hope your Dh is okay!!

and I hear you on the verbal abuse.. there was a female patient ( I was in a mixed ward) .. who wouldn't flipping stop having a go at the staff.. and when they let her get on with it .. she yelled for drugs and started to Vom.. when they were with her she yelled at them.. OMG!! you would think she was worse than dying! ( which she wasn't.. cos she made it all very loudly clear what was wrong with her.) Anyway.. the staff were brilliant with everyone.. you couldn't ask for more.. and this silly bitch was making their lives really difficult and their shifts very very very long!

and it made me think we all just take you for granted that your there when we need you.. and you really don't get paid enough for the crap and hours that you do let alone all the years of training. flipping heck!

I will stop going on about it now.. but it was an eye opener!

OP posts:
BCNS · 07/11/2008 19:51

Oh i'm female btw didn't want any confusion about the mixed ward bit.. ( which I happen to say yay to.. cos it makes it more interesting )

He's fine now thank-you - a bit jumpy but physically ok. It has happened before but not so bad as this time. It is fortunately a very small (but increasing) number of people - most are lovely and we both feel very priviledged to work in a profession that allows us to meet so many amazing people from all walks of life.

ScottishMummy · 07/11/2008 20:22

you are being very gracious about tumultuous event.very reflective and humbling

BoysAreLikeDogs · 07/11/2008 20:29

BCNS - hope you are ok now love

CAT me if you want to vent

lulumama · 07/11/2008 20:33

big Woo hoo for the NHS.

i am lucky to work alongside NHS midwives & HCAs.. who are all , without a doubt, committed and radically underpaid and under appreciated..

i have a friend who is an A&E nurse who is regularly threatened, and abused and stopped from doing her job.

am glad you are on the mend, BCNS, and fab of you to take the time to post your apprecaition.

wrinklytum · 07/11/2008 20:40

Aww,its lovely to have a thread like this.My best days at work are ones when people, patients or colleagues say thank you, makes it all worthwile,Or when someone in remission who is looking fab comes back for a visit, thats the best feeling everHope you are better soon BCNS

emma1977 · 07/11/2008 21:08

Ummadam- Sorry to hear that about you and your dh. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

Its a shame that we often accept that kind of behaviour as part of our everyday work. I have also been on the receiving end of my fair share of abnxious behaviour. In the past 4 years I have been sexually assaulted in my room, had a female patient threaten to get her husband to come and beat me up after work and had a knife pulled on me during a home visit (while I was pregnant and the reason why I stopped doing OOH GP work).

Its just as well that I love my job and the majority of my patients are a pleasure to meet and care for.

ScottishMummy · 07/11/2008 21:36

oh emmma havent you been through a lot!appalling when your sole intention was to help.

emma1977 · 07/11/2008 21:44

ScottishMummy- I have worked in some fairly dodgy areas, to be fair!

chipmonkey · 07/11/2008 22:14

OMG, emma, that is awful!
