My Dad is diabetic, and although he has cut down on portion sizes since diagnosis, he certainly eats more than you said in OP.

When did you get diagnosed, bjjb - are you feeling like your diabetes has been stabilised?

babyjjbaby · 04/11/2008 17:56

My Dad has a brilliant nurse at the GP's practise, who seems to know everything there is to know about diabetes.

Do you have good medical advice available - it might be worth double checking about portion size with them?

babyjjbaby · 04/11/2008 18:06

i'm not that bothered bout portion size atm tbh as my levels are stable imo and i am losing weight i have cut down alot and am not going hungry just cos i am a diebetic

Ask your doctor to refer you to the dietician. She/he will go over what you should be eating.

Nowadays, it is recommended just eating a healthy diet, low in sugar and fat.

babyjjbaby · 04/11/2008 21:57

yeh have seen a dietican didn't find her much help as i do eat a balanced diet but just had to laugh at 2 tablespoons of mash lol my ds eats more than that

This must be a type 2 thing is it? My ds is t1 and we don't do portion sizes as such but are just begining to carb count.

babyjjbaby · 04/11/2008 22:04

I'm type 2 (diagnosed this spring) and I haven't worried about portion size at all. I do make sure that I have a lot of veg/salad with everything though, and some protein with lunch and dinner. All my carb is high fibre (brown basmati rice, wholemeal pasta/bread) so it's fairly low GI anyway, and I hardly ever eat potato (mostly because I don't like it that much). Anything processed (like savoury rice in a packet for eg) will tend to have a more dramatic effect on blood sugar IMO, fortunately I've always hated Pot Noodle or instant anything.

If you're going to have mash could you pad it out with other things to lower the GI and raise the volume, you could make a dry-fried version of bubble and squeak for instance.

I don't do my own blood tests, just a HBA1c every so often. I think I might get a blood test kit though as I'm self obsessed interested.

babyjjbaby · 04/11/2008 22:25

hehe lol it is addictive having ur own blood kit think it will be high tonight cos i have had bout 6 mint humbugs today when i had a look at gi index there is no difference between brown or white pasta i love potatoe just cos it fills me up and is cheap

Lots of veg will fill you up and be cheap though. Cabbage can be lovely, especially savoy cabbage, it'll improve your farting health too. I shred it finely and stir-fry with a tiny amount of oil, if I'm having Indian then I use Indian spices, if I'm having chinese I'll use a little soy sauce and sesame oil.

I think the big difference with pasta in GI terms is whether it has Durum wheat or cheaper, softer wheat. Apparently the Durum wheat is digested more slowly. Fast cook pasta or the pre-made meal type that you just add hot water will be much higher GI. I prefer the taste of wholemeal pasta anyway, as does DS who asks for brown pasta if I try to serve him anything else.

babyjjbaby · 04/11/2008 22:40

i might try it then i just use asda snart price and they don't do brown i alway balance it by having alot of veg aswell
