what the difference between hormone mirena coil and copper coil?

Mirena coil contains progesterone (a hormone) which thins your womb lining. This is why women often opt for it when they have heavy periods.

The copper coil is a similar device to a mirena, in that it sits inside your womb, but it has no hormones. It acts as a contraceptive by the the action of copper on sperm (they don't like it) and by preventing a fertilised egg from implanting.

There is no difference when it comes to fitting, if anything a mirena is slightly larger and can be more uncomfortable. There is a slightly higher failure rate with copper coils (1 in 100 compared to 1 in 200 for mirena). They both last for 5 years. The main difference that users notice is that while mirena can make periods lighter, a copper coil can make them heavier (but not always).

I hope this helps.
