Can anyone offer any advice? My 19 month old dc was recently rushed to hospital following a fit which lasted approx 40 mins.

He had no temperature and apart form being quiet most of the afternoon before it happened, was quite well. He had no clods, etc. The hospital staff were initially worried talking about having to perform brain scans, etc, but during the early hours of th morning (admitted overnight), he developed a temperature of 34.5C. The doctors then seemed to think it was "one of those things" and that all infants under 3 are allowed 1 fit. I know i may be being over cautious, but I am really concerned that it may be something else?

He was discharged with meds in case he had another fit. He has been ok since, just a bit clingy and teary.

Is it worth following it up with a visit to the GP, or am i being nuerotic?

TIA

To be honest, until they have had at least three of these episodes they will not investigate as it probably is one of those thigs that may never happen again. Hard to live with I know.

Did you mis-type the Temp as 34 is below normal body temp of 37.

It is rare to fit unless its for a High Temp,or other reasons.

Some children are prone to fitting when they get a Temp even if it doesnt get really high.

I dont know that the GP can do anymore, and you arent being Neurotic, just a normal caring and worried mum.

I would just keep an eye on him.If he does start to get unwell and warm, give him some Nurofen (better at controlling a temp)If there is something else, such as Epilepsy etc.Time will tell, and you will take him then to the GP for further tests.Buts its unlikely to be anything.IMO

Thanks for your responses.

The reason I am so worried is that the fit went on for such a long time. The consultant said the usual time is about 5-10 minutes. He has had raging temps in the past but this is his first fit. I know they can be common in young children, but it was so horrific. I really thought he was going to die as it went on for so long and he had to have 2 lots of medication from the paramedic to bring him out of it.

It will not be afit due to his temp but as said before it may never happen again, so fingers crossed and try not to worry too much.
