can you not as your gp to refer you or recommend you a private paed/hosp? ours does this

hercules1 · 02/11/2008 15:09

Have you tried phoning the paed's secretary directly and asking to pay privately to be seen for the blood tests?

If I ask for blood tests for children that can't be done by our practice nurse, the hospital phlebotomy department will usually arrange to do them within a couple of weeks.

If you want your dc to see a paediatrician privately, then just ring your GPs secretary and ask them to refer you privately, you will be expected to choose which hospital you wish to go to. They may be able to refer you to the same paed if they do work at the local Golden Nugget or may be able to recommend someone (GPs aren't supposed to recommend for private referrals directly). If you know anyone else who has seen a local paed either privately or NHS, then a word of mouth recommendation is often best.

As an aside, if you just have the bloods done privately, then you may find that if you see an NHS paed that they will be repeated again as different labs can sometimes use different reference levels for results.

I would call the GP surgery first and speak with their secretary to ensure that the referral letter was sent. Sometimes this is what takes ages...

Then, as suggested, call the consultant's secretary. I always say something like, 'we're going away soon, and just wanted to make sure we don't miss the appointment...'

If you know any doctor that works privately, ask him to recommend someone as they all know each other.

I think they call it the 'the little black book'. Worked for me when i needed to see a private doc (not peadatrics - that recommendation i got from a friend)

I don't understand why you want to see Paediatrician privately? Your GP has already referred you, and was suggesting ways to speed up the process if this is was the problem? Did I misundertand?

I recently requested a referral to a Paediatrician and the biggest delay was in getting the letter written and out the door from the GP surgery.

(I am not making a judgement call about going private...

Well Woodlands is just about to become a BMI hospital and is available under the choose and book system at the GPs

You could also try Tees Nuffield @ Norton?

Hope that helps x

If you need any more advice, just ask!

BMI is a large private group of hospitals- may be on the BMI web site, and may attract more doctors to the hospital- that may be a benefit to you.

As many of the previous messages have mentioned, doctors are usually quite well connected so you can ask your gp for recommendations of a private paediatrician in your area.

Or you can do some online research and contact the private paediatrician directly. The dr we use can be contacted directly through his website, for example- www.paediatric-care.org/contact.html
