Help! I need advice. My doc has diagnosed me with Adenomyosis, I was booked in to have an ablation of the endometrium but cos my main prolem is the pain they have cancelled it. They are now really pushing me to have the Mirena coil fitted but I'm worried. I suffer from Migraines, I'm over weight, I have high chlorestoral and I have suffered from depression in the past(sounds like I'm falling apart!). Can anyone advise me please?

Am bumping this for you as I know a lot of people on here have experiences with Mirena and some have said it's not a good idea with a history of depression. Maybe trawl the archives if no one comes back to you? Had mine removed after it gave me mahoosive hormonal cyst but I don't think that's quite what you are looking for.

Am sorry to hear about your diagnosis.

I didn't have a mirena fitted because I have horrible migraines. My GP and the FPC were very keen for me to try one instead of being sterilised which is what I wanted (I was starting to wonder if they were on some kind of incentive scheme!!!). I'm maybe getting cynical in my old age but I firmly believe this is all cost related. A mirena, although relatively expensive, is a damn site cheaper than an operation and, if successful, will sort you out for 5 years. The only way you are going to know if a mirena will cause adverse side effects is to try it. Some women think they are wonderful and others regret the day they ever had it fitted. I was reluctant to try it because my migraines are already awful and they were expecting me to try it for at least 6 months. If I had six months of even worse migraines I would be unemployed by now! I did plenty of research and I was also concerned about some of the other side effects too. I should add that I was only looking for contraception.
There are loads of threads on here with plenty of experiences both good and bad.
I also remember someone saying that it wasn't a good idea with a history of depression

Good luck.

Yes, I can understand why you're undecided. I'm not a Mirena fan, because I had a horrible time with it. BUT, it has fans as well as detractors, and you potentially have a lot to gain if it releives the Adenomyosis. FWIW I suffer with migraine and in my case it did not appear to make them worse (nor did it improve them). It did however trigger lethargy, anxiety and depression, and I suspect it also lead to some weight gain. If you do go ahead and then find it doesn't suit you, it is easily removed (and don't let your GP convince you otherwise). I found the unpleasant side-effects lifted really quickly once it was out. Mmmm - not sure that this is much help!

Thanks for all the advice. I have only just joined this site and its good to be able to chat to others that have had a similar problem. I obviously need to give this some serious thought, my appointment is on the 3rd Dec so I have time to think it through.
