Can anyone tell me about fibroids?

I have really heavy periods involving flooding for about 2/3 days. The period lasts for about 10 days and my cycle is about 23 days. I'm probably anaemic but have also been told I might have fibroids and need to have a scan. What happens if I have them? Am quite anxious as have 3 young DCs and absent DH (with work) and no family support. Thanks.

you are in such a similar position to mine - 2 years ago I experienced heavy flooding, painful sex and terrible pain during the month.

Turned out I had endometriosis and a fibroid(this was removed in surgery).

I have 3 young kids and DH is hardly ever here. Waiting to undergo mroe surgery now for a different problem and am trying to schedule around my DH work commitments. Really worried about how I will cope.

I am sure you will be fine - good luck with the scan

Oh sorry to hear this murphyslaw and yes we are in similar positions. Was the fibroid removal a big ordeal i.e. how long was op and how long was recovery? I've also been told I might have endometriosis. What a nightmare. I can handle anything but not being able to look after the DCs is such a worry. Good luck to you too

castle, if you have heavy periods because of fibroids you could try the mirena coil. When you have your scan, they will be able to tell you if a mirena would work or not.

Hope everything goes ok with you.

I know nothing about fibroids but we are a bit of an endometriosis prone family. My sister has recently been operated on for it. They started by putting a fibre optic thing in to see how bad it was (bad) then put her on HRT to shrink it before the operation. The op itself is keyhole so the recovery isn't too bad mobility wise but unfortunately all they can really do is clean up and so it can come back.

My mum was first operated on when I was a kid, it came back but many years later (I was 20 by then) Eventually they decided it was best to just take it all out since at least then it would stay away but obviously they only do that if you are done having kids etc.

I get symptoms of it...I'm going to stay pg for ever, good for shrinking it

Castles - I have similar problems of flooding and long heavy periods. My cycle is irregular and ranges from 3 to 7 weeks though. I think it is linked to one side so may be in a situation.

No experience of the scan/treatment I'm afraid.

My GP recommended the pill for me to 'settle things down' and I turned into a monster so came off it. Then he suggested the Mirena coil as he said it can eliminate preiods. I dont want anything hormonal though so at the moment I'm just seeing if I can find a pattern to my problem to then go back.

Good luck.

I had my first accupuncture session this week. She said that if fibroids are 2cm or less then they can be got rid of using Chinese herbs. Anything's worth a shot imo to avoid surgery.

Good luck to everyone else and thanks for sharing your experiences.

My mother ended up with sarcoidosis (of the liver) when she was my age which was a direct result of flooding for years ... something that freaks me out a bit.

I am the same, with heavy periods and a short cycle. I take tranexamic acid tablets to stop the flooding in the first few days. It makes my periods much more handlable. The medicine acts on the blood, doesn't do anything for the fibroids as such.

castles, my SIL had a fibroid and it was 6 years before they had to remove it. So even if you do have one it may not need attention right away.

castles, surgery depends on the type of fibroid/ size/ where it is. Some are fine to be left, others aren't, so you can't really tell anything until the scan. Get as much info as you can before you go, that way you'll know what questions to ask. Good luck x
