Help!! Can a gastro bug bring back Infant Reflux?? Coming apart at the seams here.....

HELP please!

DD3 had silent reflux from about 6 months -14 months. Finally got her off the meds and she was fine, started eating again, gained weight, really thrived.

This week she has had a gastro bug and is now ok but a bit off colour. Suddenly the night time bottles are coming back up. Can a gastro bug bring Reflux back on in children who have previously suffered?

Got a shed load going on right now with other 2 DDs with peanut trials and spine surgery plus FIL and MIL's health and ahhhhhhhhh, beginning to come apart at the seams a bit.

Anyone got any advice? If I give Gasiscon it seems to help keep it down. Shall I give again for 2 weeks or so then wean her off again? Really really don't want to get back on the Ranitidine [hsda]

Thanks in advance for any help.

could it be a temporary lactose intolerance afetr the gastro bug? - apparently it is quite common for that to happen.

dsrplus8 · 28/10/2008 13:02

gastro bug can bring back reflux back.happened to one of mine at 2yrs+ .the infant gaviscon didnt work ,stemital did work brilliantly.its syrup so u give the same way as calpol.

georgiemum · 28/10/2008 13:06

My midwife told me that a dummy was good for reflux. Don't know why but she swore by it. Also said that Gaviscon could cause constipation.

Beachcomber · 28/10/2008 13:11

Bug could also have upset intestinal flora. Try some good quality probiotics (not the crap they claim is in those funny drinking yohurts) from a health food shop.

Also agree with Seona that it could be temporary lactose intolerance.

BlueBumedFly · 28/10/2008 13:58

Seona1973 - eeek, I guess it could be, how do I get around that one? Many thanks

dsrplus8 - do you get stemital from the doc? How long did you have to give it before the reflux went away again? Many thanks

georgiemum - DD never took to a dummy, when she was tiny and so refluxy I tried every blinin dummy in the book but to no avail - thanks anyway!

Beachcomber - how about acidophilus? I used that last year when she had a bug and it seemed to help I think?

Many thanks in advance everyone, really appreciate it.

Hello, I know it is a horrid rainy night but if anyone is free from earlier I would really appreciate it. Many thanks x

Hi, we use Acidophilus as a probiotic, very successfully. They also do a ABCdophilus which is a powder form that is soluble for small children. Both my DDs have severe food intolerance and this stuff if fine for them and also improves their tolerance to other foods.

All intolerances can be made worse or even brought on by a gastro bug, particularly lactose. Maybe try swapping just her milk for a standard soya milk (Alpro Soya do organic - red carton, sweetened - blue carton or unsweetened - orange carton versions).

This may help in the short term, if it does I suggest you see you GP or HV and let them know. Around the time your daughters reflux cleared slightly would probably be around the same time she was drinking less milk anyway.

Lactose intolerance sounds like a serious disaster but is very easily managed and also understood by most people you would have to deal with. (Schools, restaurants, med profs etc)

Snoz - thanks so much. If I remember rightly her reflux started this time last year after she had the rota(sp?) virus which lasted about 2 weeks. Then we had reflux for about 11 months followed by 3 months of nothing. Now it seems to be back.

I will but some more ABCdophilus and start giving it too, it was good last time.

Ahhhh! I cannot believe we are back here again. Already she has lost 2lbs and her arms are looking like twigs!

Just thinking that it is quite possible that your DD is dairy intolerant anyway. You might want to try cutting out dairy foods for a while to see if it helps (both my DDs are dairy intolerant and they both had reflux).

I know of quite a few children who had reflux which went away once they stopped having dairy foods.

Acidophilus should help but I know you can also get probiotics that have some bacteria that are specifically good for infants. One of them is actually called infantissomething or other. If I remember the name I'll post it.

It's such a worry when they lose weight like this. especially if they are small to start with. My DD1 was like this, it only took a bit of something gastric for her to get really skinny.

You have my sympathy! Hope things pick up soon.

BlueBumedFly · 29/10/2008 09:04

Beachcomber - many thanks. I do wonder about Dairy as she does not like anything other than milk, no cheese, very little yogurt and sometimes I think the body know when not to eat something!

She was in top form this morning, bouncing around singing along to IgglePiggle so I will keep on with the meds for a while and get some probiotics and hope for the best!

Many thanks again

Glad to hear she sounds like she is on the mend.

ITA with what you say about the body 'knowing' when to eat or avoid something.

Snozcumber · 29/10/2008 18:28

My paediatrician says that babies and small children have a physical response to foods they are intolerant to. Often like a burning or stinging in the mouth and throat making them reject it immediately. This was in response to my DD2 practically refusing everything when we started weaning her, and never having taken to milk. Turns out she is dairy and histamine intolerant, so all the healthy fruit and veggies I was lovingly pureeing were the worst thing to be trying to feed her.

I would agree with beachcomber, that dairy sounds like it could be a problem. Glad to hear shes looking a bit more lively now though.

You have my sympathy, it is such a worry when they don't eat.

xx

Hi Snoz and Beach

Good day at Nursery, she actually ate a whole portion of lunch which was good. No tea though, far too busy playing at a birthday party which is her all over. Food really is a second to play in her world.

DD2 is anaphylactic to nuts and intolerant to soya. She was previously allergic to eggs and is very intolerant to diary. So, we have the history in the family. I am anxious about giving DD3 soya milk as DD2 has been quite badly allergic in the past although now she is more verging on intol and can take soya lethicin as an additive, just not soya in its purest form and lots of it.

What a worry, she looks like little orphan annie at the moment, they even commented at Nursery as she has these big blue eyes and when she looses weight that is all you can see!

You can get Lactose free cows milk at the supermarket - Lactofree I think it is called. It would mean you wouldnt need to resort to soy milk and would taste the same as the milk your lo currently takes (I assume they are on cows milk now?)

BlueBumedFly · 29/10/2008 20:07

Seona - genius! I did not think of that! DD2 is 10 and avoids dairy if she (or we!) can help it, cheese is sorely missed though!

DD3 is on cows milk, has been since about April. Will def give the lactofree a go, especially if it tastes the same as she does so love her night time milk.

Many thanks!
