Large lump in my armpit

Hi, I'm new so please be gentle with me. I'm hoping that there maybe some of you out there that may have been through a similar thing and I'm looking for reassurance as I am terrified.

About 3 weeks ago I went to see my doctor as for the 4 weeks previous I had a lump in my right armpit. My doctor put me on a course of antibiotics and told me to come back if it hadn't cleared up.

I went back 9 days later, he looked at it and commented on how much it had grown. He then took some blood tests and asked me to ring the following week for the results.

I rang Monday of last week and he told me no infection had shown up and he had referred me to the breast clinic. I received my appt for this Friday and I have to have a biopsy. My lump is now about 1 and half inches across and painful.

My grandma had breast cancer in her 80's and my mum died of Leukemia (sp?) at 36 and my brother died of Ewings Sarcom at 14.

Sorry for rambling so much but this is all I'm thinking about.

I had a breast lump at 14. I was terrified but it turned out to be a simple cyst. It was removed, had no trouble since and i sucessfuly BF DS

I understand why you feel so anxious, you know you are doing the right thing, your GP has passed the matter on to the specialists. Please go for the biopsy on Friday. You need to know what you are facing, even if it is just a cyst.

painful is good
breast cancer is rarely painful
it could be a number of things, most of which are harmless, but there is no way of knowing until your biopsy. waiting is the worst thing.

Thank you all so much for your fast replies. I have spent so much time searching on the internet and everything always comes back to that horrible c word! Deep down I have convinced myself that is what it is. DH won't really talk about it.

I know it will have felt like ages to you, but actually 8 weeks is not that long and it is likely to be an infection if it's painful. Unfortunately no-one medical will reassure you 100% until they have seen the biopsy result but that doesn't mean you should worry.

FWIW if you had relatives who had had breast cancer at a younger age that would put you at risk. Having a relative get it in her 80s is prob not that significant in terms of genetic inheritance as we all have to die of something eventually.

I really hope you get some reassurance soon.

I had that at 15 and it was also a cyst.

Hi, update -

I had my appointment yesterday at the Breast Clinic. First I had an ultrasound and then a mammogram. I then had a second ultrasound because the mammogram had shown a dark area in my breast tissue which they think is a cyst. The results of the ultrasound on my armpit has shown an abnormal gland so I finally had a biopsy taken (very painful!!) from the gland. I have another appointment for next Friday to get the results.

OhIdolike - It is not an infection as I was originally prescribed antibiotics and had blood tests to rule this out (read opening post).

I am feeling much better now and not worrying so much. What makes everything worse is that I am 35 and my mum died when she was 36, I don't want to put my DS (3yrs)and DD (7yrs) through what I went through as I have never got over it.
