Near constant bleeding (periods?) for 7 months. Related to taking the pill, or something else?

I started taking the pill (micronor) 6 weeks after ds2 was born. I had bleeding on and off - more on than off - for 3 months. GP said it was breakthrough bleeding, part of my body settling down after childbirth etc, and to try for another 3 months to see if things settled down. They didn't. Also felt very hormonal and a bit loopy.

She suggested switching to Femodene (which I took for a few years in my early '20s without any problems). I've been on that for a month now and have bled for most of that time (although don't feel as hormonal).

It is a really annoying amount of blood - not enough to use a tampon, but enough to need a towel most days/nights.

Now I've started wondering if it is the pill doing this or something else gynaecological that isn't quite right?

You need to go back and see your GP and be properly examined.

It may be that you need a different pill with a different combination of hormones.

However, there may be other reasons for your bleeding which need excluding, such as cervical polyps or erosions, infection or some retained tissue from your pregnancy.

I'm baffled as to where all the blood can be coming from, but then I never did get to grips with biology.

Gynaecology is easy, it only tends to be coming from one of 3 places- uterus and its lining, cervix or vaginal walls (rare unless you have torn it).

You definitely need it checking out, you might end up anaemic, that's a loooong time to bleed for

ohdearwhatamess · 23/10/2008 19:26

Ah, interesting. People in RL keep telling me I look anaemic (whatever that means - tired and pasty?), without knowing about the bleeding side of things. I do feel stupidly tired all the time, but have put that down to being stuck at home with 2 small children 24/7.

I was supposed to go back to the GP in 2 months time (i.e at the end of another 3 month trial period) but think I'll go earlier.

Fibroids I betcha. Same happened to me, though was pre-kids. I got very anaemic before it got sorted. You really should go to your gp asap and nag and nag till they get you a scan. Good luck.

Will go and google fibroids and add to my list of possible diseases.

Convinced myself I had ovarian cancer earlier

If it's a problem with your ovaries, you would have a very odd cycle, such as bleeding for 2 weeks, then no period for 2 months. I'm not an expert, but I've had period problems and a bloody annoying cyst and tumour on my ovary
