I am having an MRI in the morning as I might have a growth in my head making me dizzy and hear noises in my ears ect. I am trying to keep a level head (no pun intended) but have found it very stressful and have had constant headaches for the past 10 days.
Logically I know I am probably ok. But the not knowing for sure is terribly stressful, at least if I know there is something wrong then I can deal with it but waiting to find out is hell-ish.
So I rang the hospital to ask them if I will be able to find out tomorrow if there is anything dodgy and they said that I won't be able to find out until see the consultant again but that is not until next Tuesday if I am lucky as sometimes it can take longer to gt the results from a MRI
I am thoroughly fed up.

Good luck Carm, woke up thinking about you. Let us know how it goes. Always a bit of comfort, I find, in turning oneself over to them however much one didn't want to go.

It's really true about producing symptoms to match the worry. I once thought I had a brain tumour and went around for weeks with a muzzy head and a strange sensation of pressure in it - plus lots of headaches. All stress. My body can mimic the symptoms of a heart attack/heart problems too, pretty successfully - it deserves an Oscar I tell ya.

Everything crossed for you.

pointygravedogger · 23/10/2008 09:17

good luck.

I'm sure teh doctor would contact you very quickly if something was amiss so try not to worry during the waiting period.

exasperatedmummy · 23/10/2008 10:03

Oh poor you - i hope it goes OK for you today. My mum has had to have several MRIs and whilst they are a bit daunting they are not painful in any way. The staff are pretty used to people being worried so will be really understanding im sure.

FWIW, i suffer from hellish anxiety and the minute i get stressed, i have this horrible dizzy rushy feeling in my head, like pins and needles - its horrid.

Just one thing BREATHE!!!! REally, it does calm you down so while you are waiting for the exam just sit somewhere quiet if you can, sit up straight and draw some oxygen in. Keep your blood sugar up but not too high and avoid caffeine. Bachs rescue remedy by the bucket load.

Carmenere · 23/10/2008 13:07

Ok so I went and it was hideous. I took a mild valium before I went in but had a panic attack/claustrophobia after about five minutes so had to stop and had hysterics so I took another valium and waited for it to work and calmed down and was able to endure the full 30 minutes.
It was MUCH worse than I remember but that might have something to do with the area they needed to scan, it was REALLY loud and actually shook me physically at one stage. It was like having a pneumatic drill all around me.
I concentrated on what I am going to cook on Saturday night in order to distract myself from being terrified and claustrophobic.
(lime cured minced salmon with avocado and horseradish cream with wafer thin croutes. followed by spiced fish in a coconut broth baked in individual pumpkins served with rice and to finish, polenta cake with orange and rosemary)

I have a hideous headache.

Well done, Carmenere. Very impressed you could concentrate on such an intricate menu. Baked beans on toast would have sufficed.

Carmenere · 23/10/2008 13:51

Well I had to think of something I could concentrate on, so I planned what to buy and where to get it and what I could do in advance ect. I fear that beans on toast wouldn't have used up much time in the planning

pointygravedogger · 23/10/2008 14:07

RubyShivers · 23/10/2008 14:09

Carmenere · 23/10/2008 14:20

Ok good news My dp's associate used to be a pathologist and is able to read MRI's and had a look and said that there doesn't seem to be a tumour But there is a problem with the sinuses, which is actually a great relief as I was worried that they would say there was nothing wrong and it was my imagination. I am very relieved

On a stranger note though there seems to be a bit of a dent in my head that must have happened years ago, I don't remember it happening but might explain a few things I suppose....

Phew - what a releif!!! You must be, well, releived.

LOL about your dented head.

I remember doing a course on basic neurology once, and the guy showed a slide of a womans brain from an MRI. She was 80 years old and in for something unrelated but they found her brain was actually squashed up around the perimeter? of her skull - a big balloon of nothing in the middle. She showed NO signs of this whatsoever throughout her life

REALLY glad all well for you today, now you have an excuse for some medicinal brandy!

Carmenere · 23/10/2008 17:45

Yes I am a bit alarmed that such a big dent has gone unnoticed

Do you not remember the day you stopped a juggernaut with your head? It's easy to forget trivial things.

NightOfTheLivingThread · 23/10/2008 18:09

Just seen this. I'm so sorry that you had to go through something so tough for you -- and so glad that it looks like there is nothing major wrong.

(Threadworrm)

lulumama · 23/10/2008 18:11

glad it is nothing too serious save me a cured minced salmon thingy!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 23/10/2008 18:17

LOL at dent in head!

Glad you got it over and done with. I had one a couple of months ago and it is VERY claustrophobic at first and I'm not one who gets claustrophobic. Mind you, I actually started to go off to sleep towards the end of mine

Good that you are seeing the consultant quickly. Vertigo sucks. I get labrynthitis occasionally and it is awful so I utterly sympathise.

(LGJ - was thinking of you lots today.)
