My dad is thinking of having it done but neither of us know anything about it so I said I'd do some research.

How much is it?

What was it like?

How is it now?

Anything else you can tell me?

Thanks you.

i went with a really close pal when she went to have it.

it worked out to about £1500, but i think it's far cheaper now.

it was QUICK!

they just took her into the room where the machine is, put numbing drops in her eyes and got to work.

it's kind of gross to watch, IMO, but she didn't feel a think and was out of there in about half an hour.

with dorky sunglasses!

went back the next day, had 20/20 vision, although that did decline just a bit over time, she is still glasses/contacts free a few years on and pleased with the results.

she didn't need strong pain relief either. just paracetemol.

she loves to swim and sail so this really helped improve her quality of life in those areas.

piratecat · 20/10/2008 10:24

expat if it declined, was it still ok for her to drive without glasses/contacts.

is it normal for it to decline over time too?

expatinscotland · 20/10/2008 10:27

yes, it is! she's just a shade off 20/20. she kept 20 in one eye.

it's normal to decline particularly if your eyes were severely near-sighted.

a pal of mine in london was actually legally blind without his glasses, but had LASIK and although he still wears glasses, he did it so he could do things like take a shower and be able to see (glasses fog up and contacts get water in them), sail, swim, and the like and not wear such strong glasses.

I had it done 3 years ago and its fantastic. I had it done beofre I had DS and now I can;t imagine having to get up in the night and find my glasses before I go to DS!

It cost me £800 (I got an NHS discount which my boss told me to ask for )

It was really weird. I still remember it smelling like burning hair - gross really. It hurt that night but then eased off. I would do it again no problem if I needed it.

Tell him to go to a clinic which offers a free consultation with a qualified doctor - some places charge for this and one of my friends paid to be told she couldn;t have laser eye surgery

piratecat · 20/10/2008 10:46

i am near/short sighted. my prescription is fairly low tho about -2.5 in both eyes.

contacts sry up, and i hate my glasses. maybe i would consider it if a won alot of dosh!

Thomcat · 20/10/2008 12:09

That's great, thanks I'll pass this on to him, x

I had the old style laser treatment (not lasik) about 13 years ago. I was about -5 in each eye but have had perfect vision ever since (no regression)...so yes I would recommend it. But how old is your dad? You naturally get long-sighted past about 45 so he may still need reading glasses, or if he didn't need reading glasses before laser surgery he may need them afterwards. Short sight sometimes delays the need for reading glasses.

flagging this thread up again after doing a search...
had lasik on monday. its now saturday and my left eye is still hazy after the surgery and blurry. Am q worried. The right one has been great since the day they did it.
Not trying to scare monger, as I know plenty of people who have had excellent results, but just wondered if anyone has experienced this and then it cleared......or am I stuck?!
have my second review next week.

belgo · 01/11/2008 11:44

I don't know Egypt, but can you phone up the clinic where you had it done and ask if what you are experiencing is normal or not?

egypt · 03/11/2008 12:55

oh sorry, just seen your message after googling and reading horror stories. The doc told me it was ok and would settle down. But he kind of said in a week. It's been a week. The stories I read were people who had it for months. Mind you, my eye is still red from the suction. Maybe it's still out of shape!

belgo · 03/11/2008 12:58

has it improved at all? Have you spoken to the clinic this week?

egypt · 03/11/2008 13:05

gosh that was a quick reply!

I havent spoken to the clinic, no. I go in on Thurs. It hasn't improved either. Still like a milky haze and slight souble vision to the left of objects. I would say it is as bad as before having it done, only in a different way.

egypt · 03/11/2008 13:05

souble? double!

belgo · 03/11/2008 13:07

let us know what they say, I'm thinking about having laser treatment at some point. So far I've only met people who have been very happy with the results.

iLoveIceCream · 03/11/2008 13:07

hi i had mine done in march this year at optical express.

they give free consultations and if you're suitable you book and pay a deposit that day, mine cost £2390 altogether but its on interest free for 10 months so its nearly paid off now.

it was uncomfortable but bearable, just went to bed afterwards as couldnt open my eyes cos they obviously water a lot.

had the treatment at 1pm, could see a difference straight away and once i woke up that afternoon had no more pain! 20/20 vision at test the next morning.

may seem expensive but when u consider price of contacts, glasses, solutions etc in the long run u could actually be saving.

best thing i've ever done!!!

egypt · 03/11/2008 13:29

people i know have only had great results. including my dh typical me!

maybe it's just going to take time. The literature they give you say that you can experience haziness and double vision but it says it comes and goes. not that it's constant.

evansmummy · 26/01/2009 08:35

egypt, did your eyes ever clear? I'm looking into this now, so just wondered if, a few moths down the line, you are pleased witht the results?

cheekychopsmum · 17/02/2009 14:03
