Has anyone with an underactive thyroid managed to lose a substantial amount of weight?

I've had no answers on the weight thread so hoping I might get some replies here...

I've always been a prone to weight gain, but at the beginning of my pregnancy with DD (just turned 4), was diagnosed with underactive thyroid. It has got consistently worse and I am now on 150mcg thyroxine a day and about to have tests to see if I need more as I am still at the lower end of the right range.

I have heard mixed theories from docs and others. Some say with medication it should make no difference, others say it might be harder but can still be done.

I have been given a exercise referral by my GP, and intend to start a proper diet tomorrow, based on GI.

I would like to lose 3 1/2 stone for starters, but to get to the top end of correct BMI, need to shift 6 stone, and to reach my previous fighting weight 7 1/2 !

I'm sure I would find it much easier to get and stay motivated if someone could share their success story/tips with me.

Hi, I've had under active thyroid for about 15yrs, now take 175mg thyroxine, and weigh about 13st. Did manage to loose weight to 10st 4lb about 9yrs ago for my wedding but that involved intensive slimming world, basic rice and veg, no fat, cake or alcohol and lots of exercise.......so yes it can be done but it is really hard work. I now eat healthily, exercise atleast twice a week, usually 3 times and still feel like a fat heifer!!!
Probably not what you wanted to hear!!!!

Not exactly , but at least I can be realistic and not get discouraged so easily if I know what I'm up against.

From where I am at just over 16 stone, your 13st sounds great!

If you would like to we could do a weekly weigh in, exclusively for those with UAT, otherwise we would probably get disheartened. I'd be up for it as Christmas is a shocking time for me.

MollyCherry · 19/10/2008 18:06

I'm up for that. Am planning to start tomorrow after a giant fajita pig-out tonight, and notwithstanding DH's birthday on Wednesday am going to be on the staright and narrow til Christmas as gym membership is til mid December.

Will post the dreaded figures on here tomorrow then

we could just do it by lb's lost or gained and try to maintain some modesty - shall we do a monday weigh in to keep us focused over the weekend?

Honneybunny · 19/10/2008 20:34

hi. i am also hypothyroid (since birth of ds1 now almost 5). i have lost about 15kg. according to kg to stone converter i wnet from 14.2 stone to 11.8 (don't usually do stones ). initially the weight went very quickly, but now i have reached some sort of plateau i think...

the way i did it was to halve my portions, never have more than one serving for dinner and decrease my alcohol intake. i do not really believe in diets, which is why i didn't want to go on one (find that once you come off a diet the wieght comes on again). i did start eating more fruit though. originally wanted to go down to 11 stone, but feel very good in myself now, so am not sure the motivation to lose the last pounds is still there...

maybe i should sign up too?
well good luck to you both in any case!

Hi jen

Good idea about lbs lost or gained as this a public forum!!

Well have weighed today, so will see how it goes, but let me know how you're getting on - I'm on here virtually every day so if you need some support I won't be too long getting back to you.

Had 2 weetabix with raisins and almonds for breakfast - can hardly contain my excitement!

Good Luck

PS Honneybunny - thanks for the good wishes - it sounds like you've done really well. If you want to join us for those last few pounds that'd be great!

Hi folks

Have just checked my original post in 'weight/diets' and have had quite a few responses overnight.

As we're doing a weigh-in - shall we move over to there for now, as I think we may end up with a few more member for our little club!

I have updated on the thread which is same title as this one.
