Flu jab or not.....

Had one about 10 years ago, IIRC, i got flu/some sort of horrible illness after .

not had one since

diagnosed with asthma a few months ago, all under control with steroid preventor inahler and ventolin as and when , but really am ok

however have had two severe bouts of flu followed by laryngitis/chest infection the last two winters, needing ABX and being in bed for days.

but worried that having jab may well make me ill

was also thinking that my chest might be healthier this year due to the steroids?

what would you do?

i'd have it. I have it every year, and although you can feel a bit flu-ey afterwards nothing else.
I imagine the horrible illness was a coincidence rather than the norm or a reaction to the jab.

lulumama · 15/10/2008 17:39

ok, thanks ruby

proper flu is vile, it makes me (unreaosonably) cross when people say, 'yeah,i;'ve got really bad flu' when they're stood in front of you with a slight sniffle

flu is not getting out of bed, high temperature, aching, hot , shivery , even your eyeballs and teeth hurt poorly.

so there !

i have one every year. i have diabetes so am theoretically in an at risk group (ie the gp hassles me relentlessly as he gets money if i have one ). actually, my pharmacist does them, much easier than making a gp appointment etc. the jab has never made me ill, & i've never had flu, not that that tells you much.... so yes, i'd have it if i were you. will the gp do it or will you have to go privately?

AtheneNoctua · 15/10/2008 17:55

I would get it. In fact, I'm getting min courtesy of work on Friday.

I had my first one for years in September. I was expecting to feel at least a little bit pants but I was fine . But too soon to say I haven't caught flu this year!

prawncrackers · 16/10/2008 11:53

Had mine done yesterday and so far no ill effects what so ever - not even a sore arm.

Caught flu 4 years back and ended up very ill with chest complications. Haven't even waited to be called up by my GP, got it done through BUPA.

Apparently it's quite a nasty strain this year, so my advice is, get it done!

lulumama · 16/10/2008 18:33

thank you very much

i spoke to the doctors this morning, am boooked in for my jab first week in november

I've had one every year since I caught real flu. I am asthmatic too, and I had loads of problems for about 6 months after catching flu, it was horrible.

I start nagging my GP from about September onwards so I don't miss when the flu jabs come in now

RubberDuck · 16/10/2008 18:35

(oops, sorry just realised that you've already booked it now!!!)

lulumama · 16/10/2008 18:43

thanks duckie ! i don;t want a repeat of last two years where i have been laid low with flu and then infections, hacking up bloody phlegm [bleeeargh!}

Yes, I remember it well.

In fact, the only good thing about the experience was that the kids had it before me and I didn't realise how absolutely shit they must have felt and ds2 was a small baby at the time.

Was only when I caught it off them and could barely get out of bed that I realised. Would have panicked like hell if we'd caught it the other way around as previous year (I think? I lose track of time) a toddler died of the flu near us.
