Chronic Pancreatitis - Does anybody have experience of this condition

DH was recently diagnosed with Chronic Pancreatitis. The feeling is that that this has been caused by an autoimmune condition linked to the rheumatoid arthritis he was diagnosed with two years ago. There is a possibility that DH's immune system may be attacking the organs of his body and the pancreas is the first to be affected. This was put to us by DH's arthritis consultant but only as a worst case scenario ie it may not actually be what's happening - but hey doc thanks for telling us anyway!

However, leaving aside that which we can't be sure of, DH does have Chronic Pancreatitis. It has come out of the blue, he had been feeling some mild abdominal discomfort and thought maybe gallstones were the problem but following a scan and various tests it was diagnosed as CP.

So, he has stopped drinking alcohol and is taking Creon (pancreatic enzyme) capsules. He has not been able to give up his post supper, fag or two at the bottom of the garden but I hope that he will soon.

My biggest worry is that his CP would inevitably lead to cancer of the pancreas but I have read contradictory information on this fact - some sources say yes others no. I suspect that there is no way of knowing how it will all turn out but it is giving me sleepless nights. RL friends have no experience to share and hence I have come to trusty mumsnet to see if anybody out there has been where we are and can please give us any insights.

My BIL has this and has had acute pancreatitis too - its pretty shit im afraid, but he manages it well. He has become diabetic due to this, but that doesn;t mean your DH will. He has had lots of acute pain in the past, but now is under control. He drinks AND smokes, even though he really shouldn't. Other than that, he is in good health and i think has had this for the past twenty years. I don't really have any advice to give you apart from don't worry, it is managable. He was told pretty much the same thing that it could be an auto immune reaction to his pancreas. He was never told that it would affect his other organs.

Sorry, i can't really come up with anything more positive. I think sticking to a low fat diet helps.

Just bumping this really so that someone else might come along.

Thanks for that. Really appreciate your response. It's good to hear your BIL is in good health. DH doesn't seem to have much painwith it at all which seems unusual. From what I have read the pain can be appalling but maybe that is more associated with Accute Pancreatitis than CP.

definately accute pancreatitis is extremely painful, worse than gallstones apparently so i can tell you - its not pleasant. BIL is in very good health actually, would be even better if he didn't drink and smoke but wouldn't we all.

Probably the diagnosis has come from an enlarged pancreas on ultrasound scan and raised levels of pancreatic enzymes in the blood tests. If it were cancer it would have been definately picked up on the scan. I hope your DH feels better soon.

My ex H had acute pancreatitis due to alcoholism became diabetic because of it and is on replacement enzymes. It was thought at the time that it was cancer but it wasn't (the devil looks after his own !) He is still alive and kicking some 20 years later.

He did have "flare ups" when he fell off the wagon so it is good that your DH has given up alcohol.

I hope he's better soon.

Thank you both. Dh is fine on the whole. I guess we're at the stage where the diagnosis is new and we need to understand it. Thanks for sharing your experiences!
