I think I might be having a panic attack though it isn't like I imagined they would be

Very stressed.
Pain in left breast.
Tightness of chest.
Very stressed.
Been on the go all day.
Kids been a nightmare.
Stressed.

What do I do to make it go away?

if it is a panic attack, then breathing into a paper bag is good as it corrects the balance again of oxygen and carbon dioxide, altho I am not sure how it works (need a sciency person I think for that)

and you need to stay as calm as possible and breathe slower, if you can

do anythign you can to relax, get neighbour/family to look after dcs and get out for some fresh air ...

I dont feel like that when I have a panic attack but I feel like that some days

just the stress of kids

I don't feel panicky so I could be wrong. Just feel v v v v v v stressed and out of my depth as a mother.

i think that breathing into a paper bag works because (bear with me ... )
when we breathe out, carbon dioxide is excreted from the body as it is a by-product (or waste product) of natural bodily processes.

when we have too much oxygen in the blood, the body needs to redress the balance of gases (o2 and co2), breathing into a paper bag is the easiest and quickest way to do this, although you shouldn't use this method for too long as the balance then tips too far the other way xxx

hyperventilation syndrome (HVS) is an disorder that often presents with chest pain and a tingling sensation of the fingertips (paresthesia) and around the mouth, as well as deep and labored breathing (causing hyperventilation), although chronic but subtle hyperventilation can cause these symptoms too.

HVS can be part of a panic attack but, despite all the stigma, most people are not putting on a show but are in true distress.

People with HVS feel like they can't get enough air, but the opposite is actually true: they have too much oxygen and too little carbon dioxide in their blood. The hyperventilation is self-promulgating as rapid breathing causes carbon dioxide (CO2) levels to fall, and respiratory alkalosis (high blood pH) develops. This makes the symptoms worse, which causes the person to try breathing even faster, which further exacerbates the problem.

The respiratory alkalosis leads to changes in the way the nervous system fires and leads to the paresthesia, dizziness, and perceptual changes that often accompany this condition.

therefore, breahting into a paper bag, can help to redress this gaseous balance in the blood xxx

According to the Buteyko method, which addresses the same principle of redressing the oxygen/CO2 balance, as mmh described, mouth-breathing aggravates hyperventilation.

If you close your mouth and take tiny 'baby breaths' the attack should pass.

There is a more long-winded and detailed method involving breathing out and holding the out-breath for one, then repeat and count to two - on up to ten and then back down to one. This will produce the correct mix of gases in your lungs and allow you to breathe freely (but never through your mouth!)

Also a fool-proof method of getting to sleep,and helps with asthma.

My breathing is okay in as much as it can be when my asthma has been playing me up (I have a bad cold.) I just feel really worn down today, more than usual. We have been in all day and I have been on my feet all day cooking, baking, washing, etc. Just feel really stressed and I know at the back of my mind I am thinking there is something wrong with me. I have achey arms and fingers, a pain in my knee and ankle and I just feel so old and at the end of my time.

For panic attacks I use 7/11 breathing (in for seven, out for eleven) for at least three minutes.

I also make an effort to relax my tensed muscles by working up from my toes clench and release.

Then for any leftover panic thoughts, I rationally talk myself through it and ask myself "why am I panicking and what is really the worst that can happen here".

Sometimes just giving in and having a good cry does the trick. I can sometimes head off an impending gall bladder attack like this.

Hi, with my life atm they are constant, I get severe palpatations, sweating etc, they are horrible. The best advice I was given though is always to remember
you will not die from one. Sometimes I have a glug of Tio Pepe!
