tiny itchy fluid filled spots around my finger joints and knuckles

not a huge amount, or on every finger, but about 8 in total?

its the plague isn't it?

Hmmm not sure they are chillblains mine are just very itchy bumps. It does sound like some sort of fungal infection/infected excema thing that I sometimes get, very painful and it does spread slowly!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/10/2008 20:13

doesnt sound like chilblains, minr are swollen, red, tender and v itchy. perhaps a form of eczema?

Overmydeadbody · 04/10/2008 20:16

What are chillblains?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/10/2008 20:33

they are the devils work omdb. sent to torment children and little old ladies - and the unfortunate.

Overmydeadbody · 04/10/2008 20:43

How does one get them though? I am worried I have them now

Overmydeadbody · 04/10/2008 20:45

Actually, scrap that, I just did a google image search.

I don't have them.

But you are right, they are the devil's work

LackaDAISYcal · 04/10/2008 20:46

chillblains are more common on feet and toes, and are hard, red itchy little lumps; not fluid filled at all. Generally caused by poor circulation and worse in the winter and cold.

Could it be hand foot and mouth disease? there is a bit of that going around at the minute. Anything on your feet or in/around your mouth? Any DCs who might have been exposed to it or are poorly as well?

hapsty · 04/10/2008 20:47

nope, not chilblains. if you press chilblains they go from red to white.
sounds like hand foot and mouth

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/10/2008 20:48

realy LackaDaisy about hfm going round? dd is complaining that her tongue hurts tonight. Shes 8 but I dont think shes had it.

Mercy · 04/10/2008 20:50

I get chilblains - going by your description you don't tbh.

I hate them. Sometimes my toes are so sore. I've actually cried once or twice when one of the dc has accidentally knocked/stood on my foot.

OYBBK, waht do you use to deal with them? I've found Nelson's ointment very good (as long as you use it regularly - which I don't)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/10/2008 20:53

I use cortisone - prob not great thing to do but pharmacist wouldnt recommend anything last time I went for advice. I'll try nelsons - not tried it before. did try a warm (not hot) foot soak in really concentrated radox powders the other day and that seemed to help.

Mercy · 04/10/2008 20:58

I tried Boot's own version and it didn't really work tbh. It was also very greasy and slimey.

Do you get them anywhere else apart from your feet?

LackaDAISYcal · 04/10/2008 21:01

there have been a few kids at DSs school with HFM and a friend's baby got it at nursery.

I used to get an ointment in a wee yellow tin (like the vaseline tin, but smaller), JJ Pickles or something for my chilblains. Not sure it helped though other than take the itch out of them. I had them bad as a teenager, but grew out of them in my early 20s.

I'm pretty sure they are related to circulation.

zippitippitoes · 04/10/2008 21:12

re chilblains i dont seem to hsave them now

itake gingko

Twinklemegan · 04/10/2008 21:24

Chillblains are absolutely the devils work. I've always been told their caused by changes in temperature - ie getting warm too quickly after being very cold. I am very prone to them as I have pretty poor circulation. Out in the cold they hurt like b*ggery. In the warm they itch and smart. They're horrible. Sometimes I've had them so bad that I can bearly walk and can't put on normal shoes my toes are that swollen. Balmosa cream is the only thing I've found that does anything at all.

Twinklemegan · 04/10/2008 21:25

Apologies for the appalling spelling in that post - must be the 5 day opened wine

NoblesseOblige · 05/10/2008 15:24

so not chilblains? good stuff. though sympathy for any other chilblain sufferers

not sure its a fungal thing or hand foot and mouth though - have had it quite a few times and it disappears as quickly as it comes, never any other symptoms and no-one else in my house seems to get it

PumpkinPatty · 05/10/2008 15:33

I didn't think people actually got cildblains any more. I thought it was an old fashioned thing like consumption or the plague

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/10/2008 17:46

well if scarlet fever is on the rise again....! I don't know anyone else other than dd who gets them too but perhaps its not something people moan about (other than moany me!)
