minging noticed what i thought was a small cut on my nostril last week, that was weeping fluid - left it to heal on its own. one scabby week later i have accepted that i do in fact have coldsores. left nostril is full of them.

so what works on them? should i go to the doctor, bearing in mind i have a small baby and really don't want to give them to him? your advice please

Be extremely careful not to infect your baby with the coldsore virus, don't let their hands etc anywhere near the outbreak site.

You can try over-the-counter medication like Zovirax or Fenistil or Boots own-brand equivalent. If it's been going on for a week it will almost be on its way out, the virus is usually self-limiting to 7-10 days then will disappear again.

For pain try applying ice every two hours or take paracetamol.

They are not nice at all, and unfortunately you can't stop them coming back except for boosting your immune system as much as possible, with multi-vits and minerals. I find pro-biotic vitamins are the best. If you have a small baby you are probably run-down and that is why you have suffered this current outbreak.

Hope you get over it soon!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/09/2008 19:49

Do you get coldsores in general? if you dont then it might be (i'm afraid) looking into whether it is impetigo. It sounds very uncomfortable though - you poor thing

LackaDAISYcal · 29/09/2008 19:51

I would get to the doctor as it might be something like impetigo or an infection (I had something similar last year that needed antibiotic cream).

sounds horrible though and I hope it clears up soon.

AnnasBananas · 29/09/2008 19:58

Yes, good point, it may well be impetigo.

coochybottom · 29/09/2008 20:33

I have had something that sounds similar and had to have some antibiotic cream from the doctor.I think it stapphlococus aureaus[cant spell it!!]

LackaDAISYcal · 29/09/2008 20:46

I think that's what I has as well coochybottom

It's one of those bacteria that lives on your skin and is normally harmless, but occasionally gets out of control I think.

Pendulum · 29/09/2008 20:49

I have this too, it's not cold sores (in my case) but a bacterial infection. I get a cream called Naseptin from the doctors, works a treat but unfortunately it does keep coming back (especially when tired and run down.... that's 90% of the time then!)

coochybottom · 29/09/2008 21:18

Yes LacksDAISYcal & Pendulum, thats it! Cyteen give the doc a ring asap. the cream worked well for me.

LackaDAISYcal · 29/09/2008 21:50

naseptin...that's the stuff.

Surfermum · 29/09/2008 21:58

L-Lysine is really good. I take those and use the patches and find the sores last half the time they usually do.

cyteen · 29/09/2008 22:03

Brilliant, thanks all - I shall ring the GP first thing tomorrow.

Am a bit worried about the baby though, as I didn't realise that they were sores until this week and they'd been there since about last Wednesday They are actually just inside the rim of the nostril though, so hopefully contact with him will have been limited (I haven't been wiping my nose on him or anything).

Thanks again for prodding me to go to the doctor - have been furnished with Naseptin and a course of antibiotics. Doctor was a bit of a twat about it but hey ho, we got there in the end

Baby seems fine so far, fingers crossed!

Glad you got it sorted

Pendulum · 01/10/2008 22:31

cyteen- my DDs never seem to have caught the nose nastiness from me, so try not to worry about your baby too much.

Glad you got the magic cream.

LackaDAISYcal · 02/10/2008 10:55

glad you got sorted cyteen

and lol at you not wiping your nose on the baby. Why ever not? they do it to us often enough

cyteen · 02/10/2008 11:04

Can I just thank you ladies. I know this is a really old thread but I am currently on my 5th day off work, 31 weeks pregnant and fed up. i've been ill all week and woken up this morning with what I presumed was my 17th coldsore breakout this year.

reading your messages above it's apparent that I haven't actually been getting coldsores all these years but a recurrant infection. NEVER EVER BEEN to the docs, why would I when I can spend a fiver a time on zovirax!!!!

I#m off to the docs now anyway and am going to demand a proper check up and something to make me feel better.

Love you!

Ive just used Naseptin twice for sores in nostrils & am now suddenly 1/2 deaf in both ears! I already had an inflamed ear which may be significant. Apparently it could/is likely to be permanent. It wasnt prescribed for me so i shouldnt have used it but i`m shocked at how dangerous it is. My advice is to use with extreme caution, as minimally as possible. Antioxidants etc may help prevent damage but i expect there are safer alternatives
