Oops sorry everyone I meant to preview my earlier post to correct and didn’t. It’s been a long day, ignore the last paragraph!

Milly - we’ve always been told to take medicines as 5/10ml not going to have a massive impact on the nil by mouth. Did they know he was diabetic? Did they say no insulin to balance out the no food?

millymae · 01/07/2018 17:15

Yes they knew applesandpears. The advice he was given before admission was to reduce his long acting insulin the insulin the night before and have none of the short acting after that presumably to take account of the fact that he was nil by mouth from midnight
After the first lot of bloods taken when he arrived at the hospital he was asked at hourly intervals if he’d mind testing his blood sugar using his own equipment so they could keep an eye on it. Each time he tested it was higher than the time before and by the time it got to lunchtime he really knew without being told that even if a bed could be found it was unlikely they would be willing to go ahead.

Why can't an insulin dependent diabetic be reviewed pre theatre the diabetic nurse specialist or Dr and be prescribed iv fluids and appropriate insulin or a sliding scale insulin regime.

absolutely awful for your dad and the nhs needs a complete overhaul and
rethink because it is not working - however much money is put into it it just does not have the capacity

if people did not have private medical care what would the list be like.
