dh has been to and fro from the gp with blood tests re high "sugar" levels. He had a glucose test (like when we are pregnant) fasting blood test then post glucose test (2 hours later). Fasting was slightly above a normal range, after was 17 (he told me normal was up to 8). He has been made a special appt with gp for 8.80am tomorrow.Does this mean he is diabetic, is becoming diabetic???? He has psoriasis and arthritis and is on a whole host of medication, so I am concerned it is yet another problem. TIA

Well the saying is that a healthy diet for a diabetic is a healthy diet for everyone, so it will be fine to use low GI principles for the whole family. If you think that your kids aren't getting enough calories because of the way that you are cooking for your DH then you can always add some high-calorie food or treats. I do this with ds as he is too skinny but our wholemeal/unprocessed carb food fills him up quite quickly so he doesn't eat as much as he really needs, so he gets extras like avocado with dinner or cream in his bedtime milk.

Lots of takeaway food can be picked to be diabetes friendly, chicken tandori or tikka with some dhal, salad and a chapatti for instance. If I have thai then I love a chicken or prawn pad thai, it's not perfect but it's not too bad either. Some things have lots of hidden sugar, like the tomato sauce on pizza and chinese food often has tons of sugar added to the sauce. If I have chinese I generally go for something dryish like Char Siu with stir-fried green veg and a small amount of rice.

Thanks bran. I have to admit that having scrutinized our diet today, although it is healthy in some ways (as in all home made, plenty of veg etc) there are a lot of "hidden" bits that whilst making it tasty aren't really helping. I have become a bit to bothered with producing a lovely dinner but perhaps to over indulgent.

My dh is very partial to takeaway. We've discovered that chinese takeaways really upset his blood sugars and make him ill. apart from that it's all in moderation. I think it's more important to eat regulary and at roughly the same time each day. The diabetes nurse suggested things like keeping cereal bars at work, buying salads and fruit and even keeping a box of breakfast cereal at work. His problem was leaving for work at 5:45am. At home we eat a variety of 'normal' meals and i don't make anything special for him - we all eat the same.
Sorry i didn't reply sooner - we've just moved house and have 6 week old baby.
I hope this post helps.
Also it might be worth asking GP to refer your dh to a dietician - we found it very helpful.
