Does anyone know a good American trained dentist - around SW London/Surrey area?

I've moved out of town and want a recommended dentist to sign up with. I heard American standards are way higher than ours here.

By the way one of the top tv programmes in the US is "Britain's Worst Teeth" - can you believe that!!

thank you in advance

His name is Jason, which isn't one of my favs, but i could forgive him anything....

expatinscotland · 17/09/2008 20:32

This one could have been called Quasimodo and I wouldn't have cared, DR. Took me days to get over that dehydration.

My landlord's daughter is married to a 'South Effriken' man and said his accent hooked her. Funny, he says the same about her Scottish West Highland accent.

DarrellRivers · 17/09/2008 20:33

I love South African accents, and Geordie accents as well
[weak at knees]

Leoness · 17/09/2008 20:36

Ok - it was a Swedish hygienist friend of mine who told me to find an American dentist.
M
Also my british hygienist in hammersmith yesterday at my South African dentist ( - now left) who also said that the training in the US is harder than here.

I want a bloody good dentist. That's all anyone gonna help??

rubbish

TheConfusedOne · 17/09/2008 20:36

I have a SA DDIL, in fact she and DS are out there now for a month

expatinscotland · 17/09/2008 20:37

DD2's nursery teacher is S. African, and her husband has the scrummiest Scottish West Highland accent as well, and they both say the same about each other's voices!

I love the way she says, 'cat'.

Landlord's son-in-law is Afrikaans and I like the way he says 'yah' at the end of sentences to turn them into a question. It doesn't sound at all poncy on him. But his wife is much more crude, giggling, 'I thought, 'Yah, I'll shag ye' is what I thought when I met him!'

And my girls are going to grow into Scotswomen!

ComeOVeneer · 17/09/2008 20:38

As a British trained dentist with a cousin (in law) American trained dentist I can tell you that it is total rubbish.

expatinscotland · 17/09/2008 20:40

The shittiest dentist I ever had was in Denver.

I refused to pay after he kept interrupting treatment to take calls on his mobile from his bridezilla fiancee and argue with her over their wedding plans, and when he got narky I threatened to report him to the Board and sue him.

DarrellRivers · 17/09/2008 20:41

round of applause for comeoveneer

Leoness · 17/09/2008 20:44

Thanks for the no help and advice !
Remind me to recommend this service to my friends!

I'm allowed to take advice from others and give an American dentist a try. Whether they knew what they were talking about more than you guys.
ComeOVeneer if you dentist like you defend british dentistry then I reckon you'd be a good one.. obviously I wasn't trying to criticise british dentist I just want to try an american.

leoness

what a ridiculous reason to choose a dentist, their nationality.

I know a number of terrific dentists (through the job I do) but there's no way I'd pass them onto you

Leoness · 17/09/2008 21:08

it's not the nationality it's the training?
So why is that so ridiculous explain?

OP posts:
Leoness · 17/09/2008 21:14

bundle?

what's so ridiculous about wanting someone trained differently?

I had osteopathy and chiropratic treatment - there different training - I think it's good to try different things.

What's the problem with that?

OP posts:
bundle · 17/09/2008 22:26

what's wrong?

"I heard" is hardly evidence to trash a whole profession with

fwiw, the American "way" is mostly about cosmesis these days, and less about function

oh, but only a British dentist told me that

cheshirekitty · 18/09/2008 11:48

My British trained, lovely dentist is fantastic at his job.

Not giving out his address though.

Gunnerbean · 21/09/2008 19:48

"By the way one of the top tv programmes in the US is "Britain's Worst Teeth" - can you believe that!!"

Yeah, like everyone in America has perfect teeth Even all those people who live in trailers.

and those who can afford to just cover their crap teeth up with unfeasily straight snow white porcelain veneers.

And don't forget what happened to Jordan (aka Katie Price) who went to America to get said unfeasibly large snow white porcelain veneers attached at prohibitive cost - she had to have them all done again properly when she arrived hom - IN BRITAIN!!

BTW, I totally agree that Scandanavia is the standard bearer for standards of excellence in most things medical - and probably just about eveything else besides in my book.

SummatAnNowt · 21/09/2008 20:25

I didn't notice much difference between dentists in the US and UK... well, except the American one said, "That gap between your front teeth obviously doesn't bother you," which made me cover my mouth when I laughed for the next 4 years. It's fucking character!
