short version:

dd full of spots, been bad since weekend, not eating/drinking, constantly crying.
rang doc to take her in.
dd fell asleep on my knee only hour after getting up.
already couple inches of snow outside and blizzards start up again.
rang doc to politley ask for doc to come out, explained situation.
was told no1, docs arnt doing call out today because of snow and dont come out for babies anyway???eh?
asked if they expected me to come out and walk 45 mins in thick snow and still falling with 22 month old in pram with temperature, constantly crying and covered in spots...her blunt reply..yes!, the doc would have to do the same!!!!
after much tooing anf froing, managed to get hold of dp at work, got him to come home and rang back to say i was coming in.
they said theyd send me straight through.
3 people later, i went up to ask why we were still there?, she said, shes speak to the other receptionist.
finally got in.
doc said it was a viral infection and wasnt chicken pox as they have fiud filled heads on...what like the ones on her hands?????oh yes, well it could be chicken pox?/but dont know! just keep temp down and come back if im worried???WTF, im here now!
she gave me a prescription for calpol to keep temp down.
asked her if i was okay to give calpol with medised as this was controlling the itching and helping her sleep..she said "yes medised is totally fine to give 'with' calpol".
went to chemist and quiried again and was told...NO!!, medised and calpol both contain paracetamol and i would overdose her and make her very ill if i gave both together!!!!!!!!

where to i go!!!
am very very angry

thankyou everyone for your responses(i will call that number tomorrow Caligula, thats great)

dd has been fine this afternoon???still wingy and clingy, but i think i can handle it better now i know its for a reason and not just to test me

cant believe the practice manager thought a 'sorry' was acceptable and the whole matter would be cleared up!!!

spoke to aunty(works in solicitors) and she said pointless taking it this route as 'they all stick together' and rang sil who is dispensing assistant and dh a pharmasist(the reason i knew i could not mix calpol with medised) who was disgusted but not suprprised!!!!!!!!she said on many occasion she has had to refuse patients their prescriptions or had to ring docs as should she issue drugs, they would have been overdosing or mixing wrong tabs!!!!!cant beleive it and am still bloody angry!

As for the US point of view, I can't believe they had you take a baby with suspected chickenpox into a waiting room! My pediatrician's office literally won't let you in the door with a rash, you have to go round to a special waiting room (and the same at the children's hospital where she was born). Chickenpox is terribly contagious -- what if there was a pregnant woman who hadn't had it in the waiting room?

Evesmama · 24/02/2005 20:52

that was my point! especially as when i was expecting, i used to sit in the same room as all the other patients waiting to see doc while i was waiting for midwife.
am still fuming

DD still poorly since pathetic doc visit two weeks ago and finally my own doc back...
took her to see him yesterday, but all i could tell him, was that 'she just wasnt right'? and occasionally held the left side of her head???felt like a dumbo!

he took one look inside her ear and exhaled louding..."she's got a really severe ear infection", im supprised you ahdnt noticed it before now, the way it looks it could have been here a few weeks"

making me look like bad mummy and THAT doctor looking even more incompetant that i could ever imagine

dd now on penicillin and neorofen
and i 'must' take her back in 10 days incase its got worse as we didnt treat it sooner, he also said her eardrum 'may' burst ! but she will be in no more pain as the poisen will discharge, but then the 'open' sore may become infected!!

am i unreasonable in thinking this is disgusting?

OP posts:
anorak · 15/03/2005 14:17

Did you tell him about the other doctor? Did he say anything?

Evesmama · 15/03/2005 14:21

yeah, but he just said that chemist wouldnt have given me the medicine without checking she wasnt taking something that would clash...i told him that that wasnt the point though was it?????

(he basically said(in not so many words)
SHE should have spotted this and if shed done her job right, dd wouldnt have been in so much pain

OP posts:
anorak · 15/03/2005 14:29

Well at least your doc now knows how poor the other one is. Not much help for your dd though

Marina · 15/03/2005 14:44

OK, Evesmama, one thing I can help you with here based on our experiences of numerous burst eardrums. I can't believe your little one has been brewing up to a perforated eardrum for two weeks...normally if an ear is infected and untreated, 48 hours is more of a timescale.
Also, frankly, unless the eardrum does burst, parents can't always spot an ear infection. So please don't let your doctor make you feel guilty about that...and your GP is also being a bit of a drama queen about the whole matter, tbh. Ear infections do often need antibiotics, and should be checked out by a doctor, but you haven't placed Eve at serious risk of further illness...complications from undiagnosed ear infections do arise, but they are rare.
Sorry you are having all this hassle. At least the penicillin will work quickly.

dinosaur · 15/03/2005 14:47

DS3 had a burst eardrum at the beginning of January and I didn't even suspect that he had an ear infection until it actually popped! And when I went self-flagellatingly to the doctor he was most emphatic about telling me not to beat myself up, that it's better for the eardrum to pop and get rid of all the gunk than for it to stay in there, and generally not to worry about it!

Evesmama · 15/03/2005 14:52

thanks for that
lad to see im not the only one who dosnt have superhuman senses!

i just hope it doesnt burst as i can imagine it being painful?

OP posts:
Marina · 15/03/2005 14:56

I would imagine it is momentarily painful but the nasty pressure inside the ear goes just like that. So it's not a totally bad experience, as Dino points out. Dd is restless with hers for a couple of hours beforehand but that is all the notice we get, so we never catch them in time. Hope she feels better soon.

Evesmama · 15/03/2005 14:58

i see?, so would releive pain?.

she's 'ok' but very cingy and wingy(she goes like this when shes poorly) and her sleep is all over the place

OP posts:
Marina · 15/03/2005 15:02

Definitely relief. I would have to say that even the double Medised/Nurofen whammy doesn't relieve the pain of an ear infection in dd...the burst eardrum is welcome, if messy, from her perspective.

Evesmama · 15/03/2005 15:05

and am i right in thinking swimming is a definate no no till medicine complete?

OP posts:
dropinthe · 15/03/2005 15:08

This is terrible! I had burst eardrums when I was little and it has really affected my hearing-the poor love must have been in such pain!

Marina · 15/03/2005 15:11

Yes, most doctors would agree with that, Evesmama. We also "dry-wash" dd's hair if we really have to, by sponging it with a flannel and using minimum shampoo, rather than the usual deluge, just to keep bathwater out of her ears. We can't bear not to wash hers at all, because the effusion gets into her curls and it's horrid

marj · 15/03/2005 15:28

Your poor little dd, she has had a terrible time recently. Hope the penicillin will help her to feel better very quickly.
I am surprised that the first GP didnt spot the ear infection, that is one of the first places they normally check when young children are unwell. (She was obviously having an extremely bad day, problem with that is that your dd has been poorly for a lot longer than she needed to be.)
I would say no swimming until the infection clears as the pool water could cause even more problems.
Get well soon Eve! Take care.

Evesmama · 15/03/2005 15:36

thankyou marj
and dropinthe and marina

was hoping to leave her hair for a few days but when i was trying to give her some medicine in chemist yesterday she was so upset, the pharmacist came over and gave her a suger free although extremely sticky lolly!!!!!
hence something about mary style of hair now!
wet it last night, just to get sticky out, but will try and leave it as long as poss although she gets very hot and sweaty when shes in bed?and hair starts smelling not so clean?

OP posts:
marj · 16/03/2005 12:27

For washing her hair could you get one of those hat type things. They are meant to stop water/shampoo going into the eyes but I am not sure whether they would protect the ears too.
Dont know whether you would be able to get one when she is poorly but I know mothercare used to do them.
Hope she is feeling a little better today.
