My friend had negative blood test but still feels that it's wheat that causes her problems so avoids like the plague - she is actually setting up a business making cookies, cakes and brownies that are wheat and gluten free too.

Naily - when you phone, say you're phoning for your friend!!!!

dh has always tested negative for coeliacs too - but really is intolerant. I wonder if he's ever had a reliable enough test.

Enjoy your meal, btw - wheat-free is a pain, esp eating out, but doable. I'm fortunate that dh won't have severe symptoms from just a little wheat, and ds can even eat a third of a cream cracker without obvious ill effects, so it's something we manage. Much easier here than in some other countries - not Italy, from what I hear, they seem to have taken the whole 'aversion to pasta/pizza' thing very seriously and are geared up to their wheat intolerant population.

Can I just add that onion bhajees are made from gram (chickpea) flour.

I was wheat free because of IBS for a couple of years, and Indian restaurants were always fine - though I'd avoid the naan.

But I didn't have the risk of a lot of pain after a small amount.

I usually encourage people to choose an Indian restaurant, as its one of the easiest things to eat at.

Apart from naan breads, chapattis, onion bhajees (just not reliable I'm afraid), samosas and anything battered, you are fine with curries, rice and poppadoms. The sauces are always thickened by reduction rather than with any sort of flour IME.

Another couple of places with gluten free menus are Beefeater and Wagamamas. I think Wetherspoons have one online too.

So, Nails, what did you do????

NotQuiteCockney · 07/09/2008 09:29

For future reference, Leon (the healthy fast food chain) is v coeliac friendly, menu items are marked as GF for gluten-free.
