POF - Premature Ovarian Failure.... do you know much about this?

Well this is what they suspect I suffer from... any experience ?
I am 37 BTW.... and was hoping to concieve my 3rd.

Velcrobott - I have this too.

With me it was quite rapid descent into menopause. I had a miscarriage in 2001 with what would have been DC3- the pregnancy followed a few months of erratic periods and raised FSH levels.

I then had 2 years when I was not allowed to get pregnant - I ahd a molar pregnancy which has a high risk of tumour growth so they advise against getting pregnant again so that they can closely monitor hormone levels!

Then once we were able to 'try' again periods just got ever more infrequent and stopped altogether in Jan 2004.

I am 40 years old and have recently started on HRT.

Its a bit of a buer - would have really liked a third - but on the other hand we have 2 wonderful children. DH really would have loved a third but it just wasn't to be

Do you already have children or were you TTC with your first?

I used to go on a TTC board where one woman experienced this. She was finally able to conceive using donor eggs.

I too have 2 kids and would not go down the donor eggs route....
What's a molar pregnancy?

A molar pregancy is where the egg doesn;t fertilise properly but instead grows into a tumerous mass. The HCG levels go into serious overdrive - up to a 10 - 30 times normal levels - so severe morning sickness occurs.

They suction all the tumourous stuff away but if there is any left over it can regrow and can be fatal - it sometimes moves into another part of the body which can be very serious.

Luckily I never had any problems after the initial mole.

I do understand how you feel right now - I do think though that it has got better with time. I have now accepted that it just wasn;t meant to be.

Seeing my childless friend go through the hell of infertility and then finally get pregnant and go onto deliver seriously premature twins, has taught me to count my blessings

Well if I DO get pregnantr maybe I should not tell until I've passed 12 weeks !!!! I usually told at 6 weeks... I have never miscarried.

The funny thing is that all three pregnancies were 'one shot wonders' so we were rather perplexed when it didn't 'just happen' when we tried again!

Yes - definately - everyone my age is astounded.

I'm afraid I've put the fear of god up all my friends telling them if they want children they need to just get on with it

They were all sure that getting pregnant in their 40's would be a piece of piss - sadly its turning out to be more difficult than they thought it would be!

I have family members (menopausal at 30 and 33)with POF and was told I 'probably' had it at age 23 when my periods were extremely infrequent - luckily they were wrong (didn't test my FSH levels, just looked at my family history) and I went on to have ds and dd naturally(although it could still happen now, I've accepted that I may not get a choice of a third child - very very happy to have my 2 miracles).
During the time I believed I had POF I got some numbers for help groups - there's the Amarent trust and I think one called Daisychain....I'll have a scout about and see if that's right.

Soapbox and WIllow - if you are reading.....
I am spotting on day 23 of my cycle (word used loosly as i did not have a cycle for 6 months).... I feel AF coming too... I guess I should be delighted but wonder if you still have cycles and if they are all over the place ?
Thoughts on cycles for POF welcome
