have you done the Nurofen thing? or Nelsons Teetha sachets? or even an icelolly, as this gives them something cold to num the gums and something nice to take their minds off the pain (its amazing how a small baby can scoff an ice lolly - make your own or buy decent ones obviously)

fee77 · 20/02/2005 21:17

Boots teething powder
Chunks of cold cucumber
Alcohol - for you!! I sympathise - we are going through the same, but all is quiet tonight touch wood!

jessicasmummy · 20/02/2005 21:24

she's been fine tonight, but a bugger all day! screaming and screaming!

anyone use calprofen? wasnt sure about nurofen - is she old enough? nearly 7 months?

I just gave ds a cold carrot....
he had fever also yesterday....

poor thing,,,,,,he's nearly 7 months..too!!!

he didn't drink any milk in the afternoon and any at night...but he had his solid....

what about Jessica or the others?

Frizbe · 20/02/2005 21:29

Yep ok for kids Nurofen after 6mths, you can give it with calpol as well (obviously not at the same time, but about 2hrs after, thus you kinda double dose them and it works!!)

sasa15 · 20/02/2005 21:31

GAve him calpol twice around midday and before 7pm

jessicasmummy · 20/02/2005 21:36

jess had calpol at 1.30pm and again at 5pm before bed. eating her solids fine but fussing with milk - wonder if the teat hurts her gums with all the sucking?!

might have to get some kiddi nurfen then..... see if that works!

always used calgel with dd.

Oh and also chamomilla stuff from boots (you know those little blue tubes in the homeopathic area) though dd was very good at just sucking the little 'sweeties' from 6 months on. They are small but if your dd isn't good with solids or the like yet probably not such a good idea.

ds is teething at the moment and calgel in combo with something hard to chew on (last 3 nights my shoulder {ouch}) seems to help. Did dose him up with calpol the other night though as he had a bit of a temp and also looked like he'd found a lipstick and painted his cheeks and chin. Poor mite has actually gone off his food, which is a definite sign that he's a bit poorly - he's a virtual food disposal unit at 6 months!

Hope your dd gets through it quickly

Frizbe · 20/02/2005 21:56

fingers x'd it does and you get a good nights sleep!

NotQuiteCockney · 20/02/2005 21:58

Calgel is good from three months. Try it on your teeth, and you'll see, it does very little.

Bonjela is good from four months. Try it on your teeth, and you won't feel most of your mouth for a while.

We use calgel if we think it might be teething, if we're sure it's that, and particularly when it's sleeping time, we use bonjela.

Linnet · 20/02/2005 22:38

Dd2 is 9 months has been a bit ill this weekend with teething. She's eating fine and drinking her milk but she had a temperature and would just cry for what seemed to be no reason.

I've been giving her calpol and Nurofen 2hrs apart. The nurofen seems to be working better than the calpol so I may just use that in future. We also usually give her liquid Anbesol for teething which usually works a treat but this weekend it's been hit or miss whether or not we can get our fingers into her mouth. She sees us coming and clamps her mouth shut. chunks of cold cucumber work wonders though, we used to give them to dd1 as well.

Horras · 21/02/2005 09:09

I am glad that we are not the only ones! DD has gone off solids but still loves Mom's milk! Is it usually accompanied by a silly cough?

emz31 · 21/02/2005 09:43

yep! DS, 7mo has a cough and a constantly wet face from runny nose and permanent dribble. also will not touch any solids. clamps mouth shut and is displaying a particularly stubborn streak, but can't get enogh of his formula. am just dosing him up with clpol and calprofen every 2 hours, plus boots teething powders and calgel - poor liitle man must be permanently high - he's been off solids now for a week though so am getting a little worried!

Parker · 21/02/2005 12:06

I used Bickiepegs for both of mine who seemed to get their teeth through in 4's. They only contain water, wheatgerm and wheat flour.
I think the biting pressure helps and it keeps their mind off it!
Good luck

nab · 21/02/2005 15:02

As soon as baby starts dribbling, etc rub gauze onto their gums as much as poss. I did this with son number 1 from 12 weeks and he cut his first tooth at 7 months without any hassle. Subsequent teeth came thick and fast and we were up once with him the whole time. With baby number 2 we didn't and we knew about every single tooth to start with, now she is better but still tells us her gums hurt when one is due. Hope this helps.

Roobedoo · 21/02/2005 16:46

Thanks for the cucumber tip Fee77, my ds is currently sucking on some - not sure if he is meant to be sucking but at least he is quiet. Had a nightmare of a day - ds is 2 days from 7 months and looking at the messages 7 months seems to be a popular teething time. Normally ds is so placid it has come as a bit of a shock - maybe it's not teeth, maybe he has been posessed!

MrsEvs · 21/02/2005 21:34

My dd is 6 days off being 7 months and is exactly the same, she is grumpy and whiny when she is usually such a happy sunny little thing. Has also been waking in the night which she has not done since she was 3 weeks old

Seems like all the babies around this age are the same - nice to know, I was afraid she had had a personality transplant

Didn't know you could give nurofen so that's really helpful and will also try the cucumber thing too. Looks like your qustion has helped quite a few of us jessicasmummy - thanks!

jessicasmummy · 21/02/2005 21:34

just pleased im not the onyl one with a grumpy little blighter on my hands!

TiredBunny · 21/02/2005 21:40

I had a little baby toothbrush for my dd to chew on (with me there to help obviously) I used to put bonjela on that so she really spread the stuff in with the bristles. I didnt have too much trouble with the actual teething but dd always got a cold and cough alongside it which was annoying!

sansouci · 21/02/2005 22:01

Bonjela! Our local English market stopped supplying it (apparently you can only buy it at the chemist's now in the UK) but fortunately, teething seems to be over at our house.

sasa15 · 21/02/2005 22:11

Oh yeah...poor thing,,,DS has been miserable tonight...he didn't wants any of his milk...so he couldn't go down at 7pm...maybe because he has a cold....stuffy nose....very snotty....

He had a bit of solids...but seem comon that they don't eat properly....had calpol and cucumber worked too....
oops.....I can hear him crying....

oh no!!!!
what to do if he's hungry?
but don't eat or drink....
again.....

sasa15 · 21/02/2005 23:02

he was crying a lot...I guess he was hungry too...apart cold and teething...but drunk 7oz...cry a bit to settle...he seems ok now...

hopefully he's going to sleep all night...

finger x

MrsEvs · 21/02/2005 23:17

I've just tried the cucumber thing and it has kept her quiet for ages - fab!

NatureDoc · 26/02/2005 19:39

Viburcol by Heel is awesome (homeopathic but strong - helps themn sleep) - get in touch with www.biopathica.com to find a practitioner who can supply it.
