Someone sent me this interesting report about \linkwww.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,3604,891456,00.html\soya formula milk{}. It may become prescription-only.

On oestrogen effect of soja... I woud need to do a search in my papers... but I kow there are effects on humans... I use to work on phthalates (which are accused of having oestrogen mimicking effects) so at the time I knew the topic well (5 or 6 years ago)... and I do remember that this was a serious issue with soja (and this came from propers scientists!)

I didn't say it wasn't for children who were allergic. In fact I said quite the opposite - that it was for babies who are allergic to everything - everything in this case meaning everything babies normally have - like b/milk, cow's milk, formula, soy etc etc etc. I just thought it was interesting, given the amount of flak Posh got for bottle feeding. But hey, ho.

I mean't 'didn't say it was for babies who WEREN'T allergic'

Oops, sorry aloha. Two ways to read those.. I even asked my husband (arbiter of flameness). Anyway, sorry.

I really don't know about various animals' milks. The allergists have always said that goats was off for my cows' milk allergic son. And I'm not really willing to try anything that might have a reaction as he's had such bad ones to the cows' milk and there are similar proteins. So I've never asked about any other 4 footed hoofed animals. Actually, I never knew that milk was available.

My son (age 1) seems to have developed an intolerance to everything... I combined breastfeeding and normal formula from very early on with no problems and in fact he was big, extremly happy and an excellent sleeper until he got to 8 months when the usual colds and teething set in. Since early december he has woken up almost every night and screams for 2 hours and has had horrendous diarrhoea constantly since then. We've tried the no dairy and used Wysoy instead, that didn't work so we were then prescribed Projemin as my sister's 2 were intolerant to soya and dairy. The diarrhoea got worse if anything and after a couple of days he started doing a huge vomit in the night but did atleast sleep OK afterwards - once we'd given him a bath to clear him up. If he's reacting to this hypoallergenic milk and is on no dairy, no soya and reduced wheat what next??? Any suggestions gratefully received.

My DS is intolerant to dairy, and more so to soya. Yet he's been fine on goats milk. According to the consultant we saw this is actually surprisingly common - he said, IIRC, that up to half of babies intolerant to cows milk will also be intolerant to dairy, but that the proportion is less than that for goats milk, so they're now starting to actually recommend goats milk formula in preference to soya as a first alternative in many cases.

I'm not sure how elemental projemin is, but ds was prescribed nutramigen , and was ok on that until he picked up an infection, then couldn't tolerate it any more, so his dietician precribed him neocate, which is even more broken down and predigested. For children aged 1 and over they can give neocate advance which has more calories and is more filling. Have you tried any of these? It is only available on prescription, so you would have to go through a gp or hospital for it, butit could be worth it. I was told not to try goats milk for ds as it would be just as likely to cause a reaction if he is that sensitive.

robinw & lou33, thanks for suggestions, I've got an appointment to see my GP on Friday so will be definately be asking to see an allergy specialist.

At the moment we're on the goats milk and I have to say the diarrhoea has improved - still sludge but no more explosions and having to bath him several times in the night. Unfortunately the waking and crying in the night has not improved which is the real killer as far as we are concerned - still 2 hours every night usually starts between 10pm and 11pm which does make me think its his last milk feed at 7pm which is causing the problems. We'll try raising the head of his cot and while we wait for an allergy specialist appointment I might aswell try the neocate. By the way is there a specific test for reflux as I know the tests for all the intolerances are pretty inconclusive so just wondered if I should be asking for any investigations to try and rule things out?

robinw - why would you believe an nz allergist site over baby milk action? Wouldn't you be better going to somewhere like pubmed looking at all the evidence yourself and making a decision?

With reflux, as far as I understand from DD's misdiagnosis of having it last year, the problem should sort itself out within a few days of taking the medication, if it is reflux. If it isn't (as per DD), it won't. Taking 5ml of mediciine twice a day for a week is prob less traumatic than 24 hours of ph monitoring which involves sticking a probe down the child's oesophagus and I suspect most paediatricians wouldn't even contemplate that.
