Is it really horrible???

Dentist thinks I need it.

Well, he says he's not 100% sure but he's "quite excited by it"!

Shall I wait and see if he could be wrong?

I know it's all under anasesthtic so it won't hurt, but it's going to sound pretty awful surely.

Tell me it's fine please.

Sorry, haven't read all the posts, but this is what happened to me:

lower wisdom tooth was impacted, slightly through the gum, making a food trap and a bit sore.

Got sent to the dental hospital. They gave me a local and a sedation.

They had to saw the tooth in half to get it out.

I had bruising on my face and looked like my cheek was stuffed with a pack of cotton wool!

Something happened to the nerve, so I had no pain whatsoever when the anaesthetic wore off, but had not a lot by way of feeling on that side for months.

When the feeling did come back, it was tingly and a bit like pins and needles. If my collar brushed against it, it felt very odd. This lasted about 2 years.

I also got an infection afterwards which made my breath smell like a blocked drain.

Not something I would rush to do again, but despite all of this, it really wasn't that bad.

Hope yours is nice and straighforward!

Thanks alias. That's useful. I've no intention of going for a GA, sedative will be more than enough. I like and trust my dentist and will do as he advises. Warning about bruising is useful - this sounds mad but I can't therefore have it done mid october - got a couple of big things on late October at work and cannot go round looking like I've done 10 rounds with Tyson. Will have to pull my finger out and make sure it's booked in for September. Yikes.

But I also like MN's advice cos you all make me smile more than my dentist does. He's nice, but not that nice! And here I get responses like yours, alias, alongside those that say "Apparently the army no longer use grenades to loosen the roots"

I had lower left wisdom tooth out a few years ago. The worst part for me was feeling my jaw being pushed to one side as the dentist pushed at the tooth. Having said that it took less than five minutes!
Had bleeding for a couple of days after though which wasnt fun. Was so good to be rid of the damn thing though as it had given me such bad mouth ulcers that my face and neck swelled completely, and I couldn't talk.
