gave ds 10ml of calpol an hour ago. his temp is still 38.9

have you got nurofen to alternate ?

he's just fallen asleep on me. is it ok to leave him?

ds isn't really meant to have it cos of his asthma.

calpol always takes 90mins to work on dd.

Yes OK to leave him but if he's sleeping on you you might be making him hotter. Can you take off a few of his layers to cool him down a bit?

Calpol or Nurofen will at best only reduce temp by about 1 degree. You can alternate Calpol and Nurofen, give each at four hourly intervals that way you have a constant 24 hour coverage without overdosing on one or the other. Follow the dosing instructions for each and don't be generous, just give him what's allowed for his age.

i have put him in his cot now. hopefully he will be better when he wakes up.

Might be worth taking him to the drs, if only to check the dose.

We had this with dd, went to the late night doctor, and he weighed her, and said that she could now have 1.5 teaspoonfuls for her weight. Gave her that and her temp went right down.

Our drs say always come in if a temp isn't being kept down by Calpol, fwiw.

Ah, still only on the first Calpol then. Might be worth checking weight though, like Von says. Maybe he's able to have a little bit more?

ok ... the dose is 20mg/kg and there is 120mg/5ml of calpol. so if ds is 13.1kg x 20mg = 262. 262 divided by 120 and multiplied by 5 = 10.916 recurring. so he is allowed 10.9ml have i worked that out right? maths isn't a strong point of mine. i'm guessing 0.9ml isn't going to make much difference though.

Your HV can check how much Calpol your child can have. The whole aged 2-6 years give 1-2 tsps is very misleading as my neighbour got a bollocking for giving her 2yo 2 tsps as she is very petite and below average weight. Was told in no uncertain terms she was overdosing her.

I give my 4yo dd 7.5 or 8 mls as she is average weight and halfway between the age range. You can still only do this 4 times in 24 hours though.

But nappy addict as your wee one is only 2.1 there's no real scope to increase I'm afraid. And no nurofen if there is asthma. f he's just hot and not overly distressed don't worry. I had dd2 with temp going up to 40.4 last week for three days straight due to chicken pox but she wasn't distressed and quite happy despite feeling so hot.

Sorry just saw your calculations, I don't think that can be right as 11 ml is over 2 tsps that is what they suggest for a 6yo. I'll go and check my box of Calpol

I think the dose is usually 10-15mg/kilo/dose
So if he is 13.1kg
13.1 x 10=131
13.1 x 15= 196.5

So 120mg in 5 ml is 24 mg per mil

131/24=5.4
196.5/24=8.1

So you could give between 5.4 to 8.1 ml

The doses on the bottle that go by age so seem to allow more than if you do it by weight

Nappyaddict just re-read your first post and see you've already given 10ml. That is probably a bit too much given his weight and age IMO so best not to give anything else more. Once awake give lots of drinks etc and few layers hope it comes down and ds is better soon.

Nappy - I'm sure the Calpol bottle says 10ml for over 1 year.
