miracle cures for night time coughing?

Dd's got a horrible cough that's keeping us all up at night at the moment. She's 2.4 and although she's had this before this is the worst and has gone on the longest. I've tried lots of things: We've raised the cot at one end, she's got a humidifier to make the air moist, we've got a massive range of cough medicines (none of which do a damn thing), she's got an inhaler from the GP in case it's asthmatic, her room's well aired in the day.

Last night she started coughing at 11.30pm and didn't stop until 2am. Then she coughed again from 6am until she got up at 7.30am. Needless to say we're all knackered. In the day she's not coughing much at all. She's got no fever. This has gone on now for almost 5 weeks on and off but last night was the WORST. 'Normally' she sleeps through from 7.30pm - 7.00am so you can imagine how tired she is in the day. She also coughs during her afternoon nap so doesn't really manage to 'catch up' on sleep then.

Any ideas?

mummylonglegs, just wondering how dd is doing?

just wondering how it's all going if you're around

Hi Foxinsocks (I do love your name!). Well, since we went to A&E things have been infinitely better. I feel so cross with myself that I let it go on for so long because after just 2 days on the antibiotics and using the brown inhalers properly and she was more or less having entirely cough-free nights. I can't tell you what a relief it is and how changed I feel from the utterly exhausted worried mum I was becoming. That couple of months it went on for in total was like a bad dream. I'm hoping it doesn't come back! If it does I will seek proper advice again even if it means waiting in A&E because the GP just doesn't have the time, knowledge and experience to deal with anything other than the basics.

oh thank goodness for that! I was hoping you would have good news. I imagine the antibs went a long way in clearing up the infection and those brown inhalers do seem to do something!

I'm glad you're finally getting some sleep. I bet dd is a different child now that she's not so tired!

(I too love your name having spent most of my childhood terrified my giant daddy long legs who ALWAYS appeared in my bedroom late at night )

by giant daddy long legs not my!

Our names have something in common - both involve animals and legs (or feet!) . Thanks for asking about dd. I hope this thread will help someone else who finds themselves in a similar situation with a GP who isn't listening.
