How much Sun can you be in when you are on Doxycycline (is that a prostitute in a bike?)

DH is going on Doxycycline

It makes you photo-sensitive

So how much sun can he go out in? Is it none? Is it any as long as he covers up?

Does it make a difference that he is Jamaican?

How badly could he be burnt?

My daughter is on this for acne, it says on the leaflet to avoid direct sunlight, but to be honest that is difficult at this time of year. I don't know what happens if you do get in direct sunlight, I thought it might be something along the lines of those brown patches some people get when they are pregnant but I don't know.

She hasn't been worrying about it, but I am sure wearing a good suncream and covering up would be a good idea. She is at her grandma's at the moment so I am hoping nothing has happened as she is by the sea and will be in my mum's pool for hours every day. I'll keep you informed.

am guesing this is in the tablet form rather than the liquid.in which case im sure you know it has to be taken with a whole glass of water to dispurse the drug properly.can i ask what dose your on?

He starts taking it on Tuesday when he comes off 1500mg of cefuroxime (3 times a day)

He is also on 40mg of prednisilone which reduces to 20mg (also on Tuesday)

ok thats fine.he may find his fingernails are also very sensitive to sunlight so just be aware of prelonged exposure.its because the nail bed is relatively unprotected
from sunlight and contains less melanin (implicating less
ultraviolet protection) than other skin sites.his ethnicity will have little bearing on the photo-onycholysis it will just mean that his patches will be darker.he still needs to take great care in the sun and i would actually suggest a full sun block if youhave it or at least a 50f.

sorry.photo-onycholysis is where the nails can become detached from the nail bed because of over exposure to ultra violet.hopefully he wont get this but its something to be aware of.
the patches are the skins reaction to sunlight whilst on doxycycline.ill see if i can find you a jpeg.

The implication is that he will be on this for a very long time - is it safe?

Eek - just noticed this thread - I am on minocycline, does this cause photo-sensitivity too?

i cant find a suitable jpeg to show you but please be assured that his gp would not have put him on this without good reason and its perfectly safe!just a few things to be aware of aswell incase he hasnt been given the full low down on this drug.he shouldnt take iron supplements multivitamins calcium supplements antacids or laxatives within 2 hours before or after taking doxycycline or he might spend a lot of time in the toilet!

All he takes is Aloe Vera & cod liver oil - so he should be OK

same advice above stands for minocycline aswell.
