Nits................HELP!!!!

I am beside myself with worry, guilt, you name it. Have a DS 8yrs and a DD 3yrs. Was putting her hair up for nursery at lunchtime and noticed to my horror that she has nits!!! This wouldn't ordinarily be a problem but she has masses of shoulder length curly hair and when I say curly, it is very curly. Have seen four big live ones so far but lots of flecks and she hates anyone messing with her hair at the best of times, so how on earth am I going to get rid of them. I knew this day would come and was dreading it. Have bought some stuff from chemist which says to apply to dry hair, leave 10mins then comb through - how we can't get a comb through! Have checked DS and have found many clear cases with dark bits in but nothing moving - where are the lice that laid the eggs? I'm itching like mad and feel so that I didn't spot it sooner. We're going camping on Monday but kids usually go without bath then because they don't like showers, so how do I keep on top of the nits then or shall I just cancel the camping . Am at my nits wits end. Someone please help with some advice or kind words for kids with nits in curly hair. Was already feeling like worst mother in the world now feel even more worse. Big deep breath - and calm.

at the mum who didn't treat her DD's headlice. That is so wrong and selfish! What I don't understand is if there are still eggs left in because I can't physically get them out of her wild hair then those eggs will hatch to new lice then they lay eggs and the cycle goes on and on surely? I can't imagine just leaving them as that mum at the school did because it makes me shudder to think that she's got things crawling in her hair - urrgghhhh!

The point is that you must treat again before the hatchlings get to adulthood. Thet can't lay eggs until they are adults. Hence the reason you retreat with chemicals after 7 days or comb every 4 days.

Thios basically gets out the eggs as they hatch before they lay more eggs.

I am not sure why the chemicals are 7 days and the comb is 4 days

Sorry gets out the *lice as they hatch before they lay more eggs.

The Nitty Gritty is however the only treatment which will get out live eggs - preventing most of them hatching...preventing the infected person spreading them to friends and family. You can't spread eggs just lice.

Ah, thanks DontNeedAnything, I didn't realise they only lay eggs once they are adult, I thought they did as soon as they hatched. Don't know about waiting four days with the combing, I'm looking through her hair several times a day!!! Thankfully, we'll be back from camping on the 7th day so will be able to do treatment that night - oh joy!

Just to add I found it just as easy to apply the conditioner to dry hair and then comb through with the nitty gritty.

I haave 4 dds with curlyish long hair............get through a lot of dvds and treats!

CarGirl, that's a good idea! I've been wondering how else I could do it other than in the bath. Her Charlie and Lola dvd plays on an endless loop so a good opportunity there with a bag of hula hoops or two!

the zapper is expensive and useless. Full marks never worked for us but the chemists ALWAYS recommend, Hedrin very good. Lots of combing, when dry lots of brushing. Its a myth that they prefer clean hair, invented by someone to make dirty hair people feel better!!! They are not fussy and will latch in any hair. I do find though that daily hair washing does seem to help keep them at bay and at least doesnt give them a chance to latch on. Must be to do with constantly disturbing them, i dont know. Hope that helps.
