Baby with eczema- what can help?

Ds is 7 weeks old and I am pretty sure he has eczema. He has had a rash all over his body since he was a few days old. It started on his hands and looked red and sore like nettle stings, but has gradually spread all over his body and he now has an all over covering of spots, even on his scalp. They feel bumpy but very dry to the touch. I am not using any products on him and am only bathing him, in plain water, every few days. As far as possible I am keeping him without clothes. We have his 8 week check next week and I really would like some advice from the doctor but so far all the health visitors have been rubbish. He is breastfed, so I was wondering if maybe a change in my diet would improve things? Apart from that, I would really like to know if there is anything I can put on his skin that would help? Also, how is eczema diagnosed? I am still not sure if this is what it is, so will there be tests or anything, or will the doctor be able to do what the health visitors have so far been unable to do and give me a diagnosis just by looking at him?

Thanks Emma. Interesting. We must be genetically loaded for ghastly excema then, baby on eumovate, husband on betnovate, sister occasionally on oral steroids.

Will ask for aveeno if current status quo goes to pot - do you think rotating moisturisers is a good idea?

Funnily enough, babywipes seem to be doing no harm- his bum is about the only part of his skin that is spot free. I am using a non bio, but would be wiling to try another one if it might help. He is a bit too small to be scratching at the moment, but it looks so uncomfortable that I think he will scratch as soon as he realises he has hands . I don't like the idea of putting anything too chemically on his skin so I will try the olive oil first. Mad4mybaby, the Relief cream sounds lovely, which healthfood shop will stock it?

Pinkveto- Sounds as though you have some duff eczema genes going on there!

Rotating moisturisers is a good idea if tolerance and reduced efficacy is an issue, but if you have found something that works and you like it and have been on it a while, then there's no need to change for the sake of it.

my baby is now 8 months, his eczema started when he was 2. docs gave him diff kinds of steroids, was healed but went back again. tired of not sleeping much, i am now in a diff dermatologist, he said my baby's eczema is infected (if it is wet and very red and there's like a crack) he prescribed an antibiotic and an ointment not a steroid because he said it will thin his skin makes it worse when it goes back. he also said to cover him with petroleum jelly. anyway took antibiotic for 10 days as said, baby healing bit by bit but after finishing the antibiotic, baby is getting red and very itchy again. am goin back to find out what doc says on friday. also, someone told me to try a sateen cotton for his sheet; cool to touch. so im going to give it a try. still finding my way out there...
