About 2 years ago I went through a very tired spell which then lead to a period of not being able to eat and throwing up when i did... I also spent most of my time sleeping. After collapsing I was diagnosed eventually with glandular fever which had also effected my liver. I still get very tired days which I have been told could last up to 5 years or could even be perminant.
When I was ill the glands on my neck were massive and quite painful to touch. Enough rambling.... recently my glands have become massive and quite painful again. Im also having days when im extreeemly tired which could be down to having ds 13 months and dd 7 weeks, but alot of the symptoms I had back then feel similar to these.

Does anyone know what happens if you get it bk again?

You can get post-viral fatigue from viruses other than glandular fever so I reckon that is what you have. I think you would test +ve for Epstein Barr if you had GF (had a few years ago)
Can I recommend talking to Jo Dunbar at botanica medica she specialises in post viral fatigue and sorted me out

I got GF and CFS 4 years ago.

I still get symptoms of it when fighting off a virus.

Hi. I had glandular fever this year; while i was in France.
It started off without a sore throat, but it felt like i had pulled a muscle in the left hand side of my neck. I didnt notice until 3 different people had said "that girl has huge glands" to a member of my group (Two of them were doctors!) eventually, EVERYTHING swelled up, even my wrists. My eyes were extremely piggy, and at one point i was finding it difficult to breathe (Not with the lungs, it was the throat!) Ive never felt as horrendous as i did when i first had it and wouldnt wish it upon anyone!! I was sweating from every part of my body, sweat was running down my legs!!
The pain in the throat was ten times worse than tonsilitis/laryngitis/pharyngitis (The last two i frequently get) I also got an ear infection.
A week after the symptoms first appeared i started throwing up everything i swallowed (its hard swallowing first time, let alone second time round!) and was diagnosed with mild gastroenteritis (Sorry, spelling)

I didnt get full on depressed (I dislike when people use that word lightly) but having a lot of time off work and not seeing friends for just 3 weeks really took its toll on me and i became withdrawn and down.

I went back to work in July, but i still get extremely tired sometimes; and if anythings going round, i catch it and have it for a while. Ive recently got something everyone at work and mostly in our town seems to have (Think im joking? Go ask the woman in boots! We had a great big convo over it ) and ive got the tight neck feeling, and im very very tired all the time. My throat is very sore too.

Id advise anyone who even thinks they might have it to go get it checked out. When a woman said "Im sorry hunny, but i think you need to get that checked for glandular fever" everyone at the table laughed, and said "dont be daft, it wont be". If id have checked it out earlier id have been able to treat the symptoms earlier knowing what it was rather than putting it down to lack of sleep.

I even find i feel very drunk after just two drinks! (My mother thinks its due to liver damage from being ill. Im unsure.)

I found that my throat felt so hot that ice cream didnt help, it just made me realise how hot it was after id swallowed the ice cream. Instead i drank warm drinks and warm soup. Took ibuprofen and rested. Even throat sprays had absolutely no effect!

Anyone that has it, i feel SO SO sorry for you!

Hope my (enourmous) ramblings helps someone!!!!

I had glandular fever diagnosed at age of 22 - prior to that had tests a good few times, came back neg. I think that big sweats were linked to it -really sweaty back, face without any exertion. Was very sick too - it was yellowy biley sick. was off work for 6 weeks and in hindsight should have taken longer, but was only a year in and felt too guilty!!!

since then my glands react to any infection - a minor occurence is almost like insect bites, that sort of sensation, right underneath the backs of my ears. depending how grim i'm feeling the whole of my neck feels rubbery.

i'm sure too that something abdominal hasn't been right since - salty foods ie prepared box meal food, really makes me sweaty, achy and the lower right of my abdomen feels gripey.

a bit of a hotch potch of stuff, some more relevant i'm sure, but like everyone else, I think you get an area of weakness with the original bout of GF, and from then on, glands at least, are prone to relapses.

one question - i've never ever had a cold sore - I wonder if the epstein barr sort of takes predominance over any herpes virus, which is of the same group but sort of minor to the epstein barr (I think..), anyway sorry to hijack on this last point, but just wondered if anyone knew similar?

hope everyone suffering at the mo feels better v v soon

I had glandular fever for 13 months, I've never been so ill in my life, I got very ill in march 2024 and only stopped feeling exhausted and Ill during April 2025. Touch wood I have been fine since. I got it first when I was 3 so when my test results came back as glandular fever the Dr explained that it lies dormant for years and can flare up after having a bad virus, I had covid in January 2024. I still get tired and my hair has suffered, it is drier than usual but hopefully will improve as time goes by. I think glandular fever is the worst thing I've ever experienced, symptoms included strep throat and tonsillitis at the same time, absolutely horrendous and I could barely sip water.
