Burns, remind me, keep covered or uncovered ??

I burnt my arm on the cooker last night and it seemed ok until this morning when I forgot about it and knocked the skin off the burn.

It is now very red and weepy, and hurts quite a bit.

Should I put anything on it or leave the air to get to it ?

Whizzz · 27/07/2008 10:26

IllegallyBrunette · 27/07/2008 10:27

Thanks Whizz, it doesn't mention covering it, so will leave it is i think.

Only problem is I keep knocking it because of where it is.

my NHS direct book says:
cool with water (but was yesterday so you don;t need to do this!)

do not apply creams or ointments

cover with a clean, dry, non-fluffy cotton cloth e.g. hankercheif

take some painkillers (doh!)

if it gets worse call NHS direct

BBBee · 27/07/2008 10:31

(doh! was to the book not you!)

IllegallyBrunette · 27/07/2008 10:32

I have plasters but thats about it i think, only other dressings I have are bandages.

Next time I will let the dinner fall on the floor instead of trying to catch it LOL.

LOL thanks BBBee

non-adhesive dressing to maintain skin integrity and not cause damage.no lotions creams

Cover the wound with a non-adherent dressing hydrocolloid dressing. Apply a secondary non-fibrous absorbent dressing such as a dressing pad, and secure well with a light-weight bandage or tubular gauze bandage.

if it does not heal see gp

ScottishMummy · 27/07/2008 10:37

definitely no plasters!

IllegallyBrunette · 27/07/2008 10:40

Will go and see what I can find.

OP posts:
ScottishMummy · 27/07/2008 10:41

try boots own brand or any chemist

IllegallyBrunette · 27/07/2008 10:47

Have found a standard sterile dressing, but i think it will stick to the burn, as it is basically a flat piece of cotton wool with a bandage either end.

Local chemist is shut, and Boots will mean taking al three kids with me on the bus, which will cost me £6 before I have even brought anything.

Can I just be careful and keep it dry ??

It is still weeping a bit but the redness has calmed down a bit.

clean cling film, lightly layer it on not too tight.no cotton wool stick stick to burn

ScottishMummy · 27/07/2008 11:01

are you ok?What treatments work for minor burns and scalds?"

IllegallyBrunette · 27/07/2008 11:01

Ahh clingfilm I do have.

Thanks SM

BBBee · 27/07/2008 11:17

how big is the burn? are you okay?

IllegallyBrunette · 27/07/2008 11:34

Oh yes I am fine

The burn is about an inch by half an inch, so not big. It is on the underside of my arm just below my elbow so every time I put my arm down I keep catching it on whatever surface, or it sticks to my clothes.

Have wrapped clingfilm around it now, so hopefully that will do the trick.

It doesn't hurt as much anymore.

OP posts:
IllegallyBrunette · 27/07/2008 17:27

Have just taken the clingfilm off because it was starting to feel sore again, and it is still really weepy and hurts again now.

Should I cover it back up again or leave it ??

BaDaBing · 27/07/2008 17:29

You may not believe me, but I always put honey on burns and cover in cling film - earlier the better! You will realy help along the healing process, even if you do it now.

IllegallyBrunette · 27/07/2008 17:30

Damn, don't have any honey.

OP posts:
ScottishMummy · 27/07/2008 18:34

keep it covered & clean.can you get to a chemist or GP get it dressed?be vigilant it doesn't get infected

IllegallyBrunette · 27/07/2008 18:52

I am going to cover it with clingfilm again to keep it clean, and then I will go to the chemist and ask for advice tommorow.

It stings alot

LIZS · 28/07/2008 08:51

you can get specialist burn plasters which keep it moist.
