It hadn't occured to me that it might be a sign of a health problem until today. She is 10 weeks, and hasn't had it for a while, but did have it in the early weeks and then just smelt it again today. She is too young for diabetes, surely? We have been struggling with the breast feeding but i've been expressing and giving her bottles to keep up her intake. She is a bit of a reluctant feeder most of the time though. She is happy and smiley and alert, though she was very sleepy in the early weeks. should i be concerned? I hadn't even mentioned it to the doc at her 8 week check as i hadn't thought much about it.sometimes it is really quite strong...

There's something with the pear drop smell that is ringing bells, but can't think what. I do seem to recall that it was something to def. get checked out though. I'd speak to your GP. Hope she's OK

Just googled it - was annoying me. Pear drop smell is an accumulation of ketones, usually linked to diabetes. Can babies get diabetes? Def. check with your GP

idin't think babies could get it..i will mention it tho...hate going go the docs..

diabetis can occur from birth as many type 1 diabetics find out in early childhood

midtowner · 01/11/2010 00:20

Type 1 diabetes can happen at any age - my son has had it since he was 5, but I know many families where far younger children have been diagnosed. Please get your baby checked (ask your GP to do a finger prick blood test, as glucose might not show up in a urine test).

One more for the "go get diabetes check" side.

My cousin's daughter was 4 months old when she was diagnosed with it
