how to baby-proof banisters?!

Not sure if this should be in health but will be a serious health problem if I don't get it sorted!!

Anybody know of a good way to baby-proof banisters? I've read that you can put canvas material along them. Does that sound useful?

I know babies have to find out things for themselves but so far my 1yr old dd has discovered she can stand up and ease herself through sideways so am taking no chances!

A friend had a perspex sheet and I've also seen a gauzy thing that you tie on

we were a little more drastic - bought some thin boarding ( like thin plywood) that would sit between the rail and the floor and painted it to match the room and then just nailed it to the banisters - although we have one who is 2 1/2 and not walking and another babe who no doubt will need the house baby proofed for. We had to be sure it would work as we have a drop to concrete below the stairs..... Internal stairs cut through the floor to downstairs iykwim.

I think perfectly happy people had the gauze barrier that you just tied on to the support.

my autistic 5 year old started sliding through ours so we taped heavy cardboard against them. So much for our original Edwardian features. Am waiting for him to grwo so he won't fit through them anymore (mind you now he's just started trying to climb over them).

A friend of mine has just used the cheap indoor washing airers that you can buy from Argos and tied them on. Its kept her two children from falling down the stairs
