Can a 10 week old baby have probiotics?

My 10 week old DS was on very strong antibiotics when he was 4 weeks old as he was in hospital and they thought he may have meningitis. It turned out to be a urine infection so the antibiotics were then changed. He had antibiotics for about 3 weeks in total.

Ever since he has been quite windy and his poo is very watery, green, quite foamy. Saw a cranial ostepath and he mentioned about probiotics as the antibiotics can also get rid of good bacteria from the gut. However when he showed me the literature, it said from 6 months.

Just wondered if anyone had any experience of these and if they can be given to babies this young?

Ta.

Well, it was an osteopath who recommended them, said they have helped other children he has worked with. I trust his experience and opinion so feel there's nothing to lose from trying them.

moondog, intensive farming has stripped the earth of nutrients. levels of some nutrients in the soil are so low now that they have all but disappeared. (look at the soil association website) even organic farming is not all that its cracked up to be as even after 5 years of not being intensively farmed, nutrients levels are still very low and the soil association is only just admitting this, so if you buy organic food just to avoid chemicals then carry on, but if you buy organic food for the nutrient packed goods you think they are, think again!!
(I am a nutritionist as well as a herbalist)

there are many websites you can get info like this on. I would usually post some links but as I have my son with me at the moment, I have little time I am afraid, but any organic certification body will tell you about poor nutrient levels in the soil.
info on gut flora after anti b's is also widely available, google and have a look????

(sorry, thats not meant to be nasty, am writing quick as my son has just come and sat on my lap and wants to go back to bed!!)

Hello,
I have been on 2 courses on abs and dd has been on one since birth. I am not sure about giving her probiotics but can't I take some and which would you recommend? She is exclusively bf. Thanks.

A family i worked for who had twins born at 34 weeks and who both required SCBU care and many AB's & other meds or gastro issues were told by the neonatal pead to use this

I've always used Solgars probiotic from just months old with my Son. Especially when he had an upset tummy. Probiotics do the word of good by helping rebalance a babys internal flora which antibiotics totally destroy. They kill the bad bacteria and the good your baby needs for a healthy digestion. A good baby probiotic like Sogars or Natures best will only aid your childs recovery not hinder it.

I am not an expert in the matter but have done enough nurtition courses and reserch to include probiotics on a regular basis in my ds diet, esecially at times of sickness or loose stools.

Saying that everyone has to make up their own mind what is best for them and their children based on their own research. Probiotics are only now getting the exposure in the mainstream they deserve, for both Adult and Child. A healthy immune system is aided by a healthy Gut so should be an important factor in health of everyone.

Just my opinion.

We have used Biocare acidoplilus plus powder with DD since she was 10 weeks old. She has cystic fibrosis and is on antibiotics long-term- and it has helped enormously. Her consultant actually advised this probiotic (see: www.yourhealthfoodstore.co.uk/details.php/p1687_biocare_acidophilus_plus_banana_or_strawberry.html)
They have undoubtedly helpd her and eased tummy pain she suffered with before. She was also breastfed until 12.5 months.

Incidentally there is some research now linking lack of probiotics (due to early use of antibiotics) and later development of allergies especially eczema. DS was born early and had many courses of antibiotics during his weeks in SCBU and went on to develop severe eczema. DD hasn't got any eczema. I know that's only anecdotal evidence and many other things come into play, but I can't help but wonder if DD's probiotics made some of the difference .
