Oxybutinin - any experiences?

Consultant wants to treat 5yo dd with oxybutinin for an over-active bladder.

Anyone know anything about this, or have any experience with it?

I've finally agreed to let dd take this medication. But reading about the side-effects - I'm horrified and terrified! All the paed advised me about were dry mouth and blurred vision, and she said that dd would have to just tough it out for about 6w and then the side-effects would pass. She didn't mention hallucinations, nightmares and behavioural problems! Dd has enough trouble already with nightmares and behavioural problems. I just don't know whether I'm doing the right thing for her.

Please, can anyone talk to me about this?

hello PC

no experience with paediatric dose but mum takes this due to having MS and recurrant urine infections. no problems in the years she's taken it, to my knowledge - sorry not much help

has you lo started them?

PrettyCandles · 25/02/2009 12:53

Thanks for replying, ouchitreallyhurts. (Will a kiss better help? )

Yes, dd has been taking it for 3w now. No effect on her bladder, but her behaviour is even worse than usual, her lips are permanently scabby, and she was in and out of our bed all last night. Not that any of that can be put down to the medication - it could simply be a phase where things are worse than normal for her.

I can't believe that, in the huge world of MN, there are no parents with children who have had to take this!

bless her. perhaps it will take a little more than 3 weeks to kick in for her bladder and then the less favourable effects will die down?

I know your daughter is over 5 but wondered if your/her former health visitor would have any ideas? between us we'll keep bumping this an dhopefully a dr/nurse/paediatrician or someone with personal/parental experience of it will come along
