I've had a letter enviting me for a smear test. I am 27 and have never had one done. I would find it extreamly embarassing. I just wondered if it was really nessesary. I wasn't young (at all) when I lost my verginity, I've only has one sexual partner(my husband), I don't drink, or smoke and I'm in good health. I'm not high rist at all I don't think.
God, that makes me sound really boaring. Anyway, do you think I should go? and if so does it hurt? Thanks.

If you have had a baby, how can you be embarrassed by having a smear done?

They really have seen it all before- just get it done. 5 minutes of mild embarrassment maybe to save years of suffering.

my practice nurse tells some cringey stories about women who go for smear tests......including one woman who refuses to take her knickers off ,another that wears full stockings and suspenders a woman who wore her husbands boxer shorts cos she had no clean knickers ......a woman whose pubic hairs were so matted together she had to trim her before she smeared.....believe me YOU are probably run of the mill normal the nurse actually said its like being an optician you are focused on what youre looking for and youre not really looking at the bodily part .......

That's so true windygalestoday!!

I could tell you some tales

I remember when I was doing my smear training course I was being assessed, and had a lady in with genital piercings - I had to ask her to unbolt her labia so I could put the speculum in!

NorthernLurker · 14/07/2008 22:50

UNBOLT HER LABIA??????

windygalestoday · 14/07/2008 22:50

sidge your not in the north west are you???

my practice nurse said similar lol

mummyloveslucy · 14/07/2008 22:52

So, it's clean knickers, no suspenders or boxers and a bit of topiary and I'll be fine. My Mum is a midwife and she has some shocking stories to tell. You just wouldn't believe it.

cafebistro · 14/07/2008 23:03

Yes they are necessary! My friend is a practice nurse and spends nearly all her time doing smears...Its so routine to her that she doesnt think twice about it.
Once its done you wont have to think about it again for a few years.

mummyloveslucy · 14/07/2008 23:05

I have always found long skirt and flip flops/sockless shoes best for anything like this - no thing of "should I take my socks off?" etc

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 14/07/2008 23:15

This is the article I read in NOW about the change in age for when you get called for a test, I hadn't even realised it had changed, though it makes sad reading.

Mummyloveslucy, you'll be fine - five minutes and you'll be off skipping for your cake

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 14/07/2008 23:19

Sorry, could only find it on the DM site, it was Claire in the NOW article.

Sidge · 15/07/2008 10:18
