docs or not ?, dilemma

Just wanted some opinions before I act one way or another. Brief background DS 19months, has chronic lung problems, believed to be persistant bronchitits. On and off long term antibiotics, many admissions, with some viral wheeze issues thrown in for good measure.
Recently he has been quite well so was taken off anti.b's by our gp (normally i dont go to gp for anything chest related, under fab respiratory consultant). The reason behind this was constant diarrhoea. Fast forward 2 weeks.
His chest sounds terrible again. He is very ruttly, lots of green sputum and terrible wet cough...but...he is well in himself. NOt off his food, happy, running around etc etc.
Now I know from experience if I take him to doc, they will send him to a/e who will admit. His sats are always below 92% when he is like this. They will pump him full of asthma meds, oral steroids, more chest xrays and restart anti.b's. My dilemma is he really doesn't seem sick. We get stuck on a baby ward where it is frowned on if he runs round, and ideally they want him stuck in a cot, fine if he feels miserable but it will be torturous now.
So, is it terribly negligent to leave him and reassess daily? He is due a follow up with consultant next monday anyway.
As regards what will happen if i do take him, I would bet my bottom dollar thats what will happen as his chest IS so bad.
SO what would you do?

When you say next monday, do you mean tomorrow?

maturestudent · 13/07/2008 10:22

no, week after, but can get access to respiratory nurse specialist via telephone from tomorrow though.

my ds1 is exactly the same ,and curently wheezy, when i take him to be checked and he is eating, playing etc.. they just call him a happy wheezer give steriods, more puffs of his inhalers, you know your child and know when he needs extra help to breath,if he can breath ok,eating fine i would prob see how he is tomorrow......

Hassled · 13/07/2008 10:25

I think go with your instincts and leave it for now. If he's in good form and eating well then that's a good sign, so not negligent to adopt the wait and see approach. Just don't go too far from home.

Call the nurse tomorrow and tell her what you've posted here. Including the bit about him being happy to run around but stopped from doing it in hospital.

edam · 13/07/2008 10:33

(Hopefully she can suggest ways you can manage his chest outside hospital.)

theboob · 13/07/2008 10:37

after speaking with my ds1 cons,he gives him a nebulizer,an hours observation in the play area, and if he is well and eating and his sats are up ,we get sent home with 48 hours open acsess to the children ward,i saves my sanity and ds2's because he seems to cope really well with his bad chest

Personally I would take him, as they are better qualified to make the decision whether to admit him or not, as they have far more training and experience. You can explain when you get there that he seems happy in himself and running around and I'm sure they will take that into account when making their decision. I don't think they would admit him unless they felt it necessary.

Thank you all for your opinions.
I have decided to leave him for the time being. He is happily playing in garden. Bedtime will be the tester though anyway as he tends to get worse then anyway. So forgoing bbq glass of wine just in case of having to drive,
