How did life carry on for the 6 weeks it was in a cast (is it 6 weeks theses days?)
Did your lo still go to playgroup/nursery?
Did you have to do everything for them ?

DD broke her wrist when she was 3. just before starting playgroup and ballet. made interesting 'first' photos. it did get a bit filthy though but she coped fine - i was a nervous wreck though.

LucyJones · 12/07/2008 20:41

oh god I hope playgroup and nursery are fine
such a same he will have to sit and watch Sports Day and won't be able to run around as usual at the nursery leavers party. Poor wee thing.

Worse. My dd's 5 year old friend broke her arm at MY house in my care.

Ds' best friend broke her arm last year when she was 6 (not at my house).

In both cases life seemed to continue pretty much as normal. Mostly parents had a hard time convincing children that they really couldn't do sports and swimming and other active activities. In the case of ds' friend, trying to keep her from using it as a lethal weapon was also an issue. Neither child missed more than a day of school. In both cases it was the writing hand and they just had fun learning how to write with the other hand. Kids are adaptable....don't worry.

how long would he be in a cast for?

OP posts:
Bbbee · 12/07/2008 20:44

oh lucy - poor thing.

my ds just came out of his cast - but he is 8. All I can say it that it was alot easier than I imagined and they get used to it pretty quick.

Also if it is any consolation ds says it doesn't hurt at all but is a bit annoying.

I have one of those things you put over it so you can still bath etc. if that would be any help.

LucyJones · 12/07/2008 20:46

oh thanks that sounds fab!

DS1 broke his arm at 2.5 - the anticipated nightmare wasn't actually as bad as expected. He adapted incredibly quickly and it didn't really slow him down. Only a pain with things like going to the beach as it was middle of summer, but parks, playgrounds etc were fine - the 'plasterer' said not to worry too much as his arm in plaster was stronger than the one not in plaster IYSWIM. The time did go very quickly and he didn't seem to mind too much! Although the plaster was minging when he had it taken off!

LucyJones · 13/07/2008 18:50

The break is just above the elbow so he has a massive cast - I can't even get a T shirt over it.
He has to stay in a sling too.
I can't see how he can go to nursery and I can't take loads of time off work.
He is yelling all the time and saying he needs help just getting about but I'm hopign that is because it's just day 2.

Ds broke his arm 5.5 weeks ago. He's 5.5yrs old

He's been fine tbh.
Slept ok etc. I am collecting him every day after he's eaten his school dinner, then taking him back for afternoon school. I dont want him running round the playground.

His cast is quite dirty and smelly now. Should be getting a below elbow cast on friday.

The only hard times have been when he's been sad at not being able to go on the trampolene, slide, swing, climbing frame etc..

LucyJones · 13/07/2008 19:13

does he have to keep it in a sling?
how did you get clothes over it?!!

My dd broke her arm when she was 3. She managed to take the cast off while at a festival 2 weeks later - the doctors in the festival medical team were great but had never encountered a child who managed to wriggle their arm out of their cast before!

Other than her Houdini style antics she was fine with it, and it healed well.

He can wear short sleeved tops. I have cut one arm off of some cheap sainsburys school jumpers.(£2) His rain mac fits over the cast luckily.

His cast is set with a bend at the elbow too.

DrNortherner · 13/07/2008 20:52

I had a 5 year old with a broken arm. He coped far better then I did!

Removal of teh cast was hard for him though - he hated the noise of that machine!

TequilaMockinBird · 13/07/2008 20:53

My DD was 5 when she broke her arm. The cast was on for 4 weeks iirc.

She went to school as normal and she enjoyed showing off her bright pink cast!

Bathtimes are a bit of a pain, but if put the arm in a carrier bag and tie the handles at the top, it should stay dry and be fine!

LucyJones · 14/07/2008 08:14

He has to go back on Friday so maybe they will give him an easier to get around type cast

Oh, poor DS, LJ

And poor you too - must be very hard to watch him struggling with the cast. Fingers crossed they give him a better cast.

cluttercup · 14/07/2008 08:57

DS aged 3.5 broke his arm a couple of months ago. Apart from before it was put in a cast, he was in no pain at all and quickly adapted. I was more of a nervous wreck than him! The cast was on for nearly 4 weeks and didn't stop him from doing anything other than the obvious (swimming and paddling pools, contact sports(!) etc . My only advice is the more you chill out, the more chilled he will become.

Incidentally, ds's break was in the same place as your childs. Ds carried on going to preschool and everything. We had to ban the trampoline and soft play but he managed really well. We were particularly proud of him because he is autistic so going to the hospital and having people touch him was a huge deal!

Coops61 · 27/04/2015 05:40

My DS broke his arm one week ago above the elbow. He had surgery to connect the bone back to the elbow with wires. He is fine during the day but at night has a temperature and is restless, had one night terror which is really upsetting. I have contacted 111 and they say go to A&E to get it checked. I am in terrible dilemma as he is not so obviously feverish but in some pain at night and restless. I don't know if this is part of the healing process. If I go back to hospital I think they will cut the cast open and I know this will distress him. I am feeling sick with worry, has anyone else been through same?
