Poss tmi warning - DH has worm in leg

Dh has just returned from the Gambia with what he thought was an insect bite on his leg. Over the last week it has got bigger and yesterday a small white worm popped out of it (where's the yuk emoticon when you need it?) Went to GP who admitted she didn't know what to do and has referred him to dermatologist at hospital on Friday.

Has anyone heard of this - googling only produces 'guinea worm disease' which causes severe pain, and he says it's just a bit uncomfortable. Dh wants to know what the treatment will be (altho I think he has an idea...) and whether he'll have to take antibiotics.

Can you post a pic of the wormy leg?

HuwEdwards · 09/07/2008 23:28

A Worm In His Leg!!!!!OMG

cornsilk · 09/07/2008 23:35

Squeezing the worm could be just as good as squeezing a spot though. I can see the pros.

IHaveNameChangedForThisPost · 09/07/2008 23:39

It is known as a tumble fly where I come from . The vaseline theory is spot on. It pops up for air, you gently ease it out. Job done.

It is a fly that lays eggs exciting places like clothes lines. Hence the need to iron your undies in the tropics.

noddyholder · 09/07/2008 23:39

can i come round and see it?

See BOT FLY AND TUMBU FLY - Myiasis near the bottom of this page.

Sidge · 09/07/2008 23:42

Tape a piece of bacon to his leg, then when Mr Wormy comes out for a bite you can grab it and squash it!!!

IHaveNameChangedForThisPost · 09/07/2008 23:44

more here

cornsilk · 09/07/2008 23:45

What happens if they don't get removed then? Do they turn into flies? That would be gross.

IHaveNameChangedForThisPost · 09/07/2008 23:47

Never even seen one but I still have nightmares about them.

onebatmother · 09/07/2008 23:48

I am not clicking the link. I want to see wormy. Sphil needs to post a pic.

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 09/07/2008 23:52

Think the tropical medicine centres in London or Liverpool are the people to help you.

sphil · 09/07/2008 23:56

Dh says thank you for links. He now knows he has a furunculous disease. He has spent the last ten minutes taking photos of his leg, but they're very disappointing. All you can see is a red spot with a white bit in the middle. He has promised DS1 to bring the worm home if the dr gets it out and will let him keep it [shock}.

OP posts:
cornsilk · 09/07/2008 23:57

He could sell it on ebay.

sphil · 09/07/2008 23:58

There are pics on the link - not as good as our worm though [proud emoticon]

Right - must go to bed (runs up quickly and barricades door while DH still turning off lights...)

OP posts:
cornsilk · 10/07/2008 00:00

are you going to try to capture it alive?
