There is this -

Natural gout remedies

A good natural remedy is quercetin - a bioflavonoid and anti-inflammatory agent that inhibits the enzyme xanthine oxidase which triggers the production of uric acid. Quercetin is found in red and yellow onions but you would need to eat two onions a day to get a high enough dose - the equivalent of 250mg, three times a day - to prevent or treat gout, so it makes sense to take a supplement.

Vitamin C has now been shown to increase the urinary excretion of uric acid and since all the bioflavonoids, including quercetin, work better when taken with this nutrient, look for a supplement that combines both.

my FIL swears by cherries

think he eats them fresh, but you can also buy a supplement

girlandboy · 09/07/2008 10:34

Celery as well apparently!

If nothing else he will be getting his 5 fruit and veg a day.

I read about the cherry remedy too. Apparently you need to eat at least 2 lbs in one go to start with!

Foods known to decrease the occurrence of gout include: dairy, foods high in potassium, black cherry juice, blueberries and lemon juice.

nancy75 · 09/07/2008 10:46

thanks bubblagirl, he seems to be immune to the meds from the gp, he has had this for years and tried everything the gp has!
will add apple cider vinegar to the list!

found this

  1. Foods to avoid- eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, wheat, corn, beef, pork, eggs, dairy, fried foods, sugar products, refined carbohydrates and foods high in gluten which tends to intensify inflammation.
  1. Foods to eat- foods high in sulfur such as asparagus, cabbage, garlic, and onions which may help repair cartilage and bone. Also include fish, flax (omega-3 fatty acids), and borage oil (omega-6 fatty acids) which can help decrease inflammation.
  1. Multivitamin- including antioxidants such as vitamin E, C, A, selenium, and zinc because we no longer get optimum amounts from our daily diet to fight free radical attacks on the joints.
  1. Exercise- beneficial in helping to reduce stiffness, and maintain an optimum weight to help ease the pressure on those weight bearing joints.
  1. Celery seed- this wonderful natural spice contains nearly two dozen anti-inflammatory compounds known for decreasing inflammation.
  1. Glucosamine supplement- the joints stop producing this necessary substance that helps alleviate stiffness.
  1. Chondroitin supplement- the body stops producing chrondocytes which help maintain healthy joints.
