Fill me with hope please - what else could this lump be?

DH has been to the GP today as he found a lump about the size of a new potato in his side.
They're taking it out next week and sending it off for investigation.
So.....a week of worrying my socks off ahead
What else could it be? He says it hurts but it hurts because it is sort of over a muscle on his hip area. Has anyone elses DH ever had anything like this?
Please send me positive thoughts and virtual wine and chocolate. This news has come at the end of a very stressful period for us both and I feel a little as if I'm teetering on the edge of a very large, dark pit.

Benign cyst most likely, honestly

DorrisMcWhirter · 08/07/2008 19:11

That sounds ok. Dare I google it, or is that the start of a slippery slope?

My BIL had one of these and it was a benign cyst. I wouldn't google, it sounds like you've already got a lot to deal with, you don't need any more worry. (I'm stating the obvious, I know).

Here's lots of virtual wine, chocs and positive vibes.

DorrisMcWhirter · 08/07/2008 19:19

Thanks subrosa.
You're probably right about the googling - I really need to sleep at some point in the next week.

could be a mass of fatty tissue my friend had a few of these but dont worry yourself to much just wait for results hope all goes ok x

girlandboy · 08/07/2008 21:01

My dh had a lipoma (fatty lump). It didn't hurt unless he fiddled with it, and of course he couldn't bloody leave it alone, so it always hurt. He had it removed (it was on his head!) under local anaesthetic.

DorrisMcWhirter · 08/07/2008 21:04

Thanks g&b. I'm trying to remain very positive about all this as I'm sure he doesn't need the added stress of worrying about me worry iyswim!

I have never heard of anything nasty in the hip area lump-wise.

DorrisMcWhirter · 08/07/2008 21:21

JacobsPrincess · 08/07/2008 21:26

PS I'm sure everything will be fine Dorris, but step away from the keyboard now - no joy will come of Google, only worry that way leads

DorrisMcWhirter · 08/07/2008 21:27

My DH has had a large marble-sized hard lump in his scalp which he's had removed twice, but it just comes back, and one in his back. Both benign sebacious cysts.

Do not look up anything until you get some specific identification. More likely than not to be harmless. Not surprised you're anxious though. Lumps which shouldn't be there are a bloody nuisance!!

DorrisMcWhirter · 08/07/2008 21:35

I agree, lumps should be banned as pure evil things sent to make life hell.
Why is it that you hear the word 'lump' and all that springs to mind is the c word?

naswm · 08/07/2008 21:39

little reasurance I can offer, but DS2 had a tumour in his throat/necl which grew and grew and appeared as a lump protruding 2 inches by 1 inch by time it was removed. It was benign.

I woudl be reassured that they are suggesting removing it straight away rather than biopsy it etc first - although I am not a medic but ime that means that think it is suitable to cut off etc rather than more detailed treatment IYKIWM

I am not helping, am I? sorry!

DorrisMcWhirter · 08/07/2008 21:41

No naswm, don't worry, it's all good!
I also think it is good they are being so swift in removing it. Also that it is being done at gP surgery is somehow comforting

girlandboy · 08/07/2008 21:43

My dh's lipoma (on his head!) is growing back again. I had a fibroadenoma in my left breast, but this eventually went away on its own.

naswm · 08/07/2008 21:44

gosh yes try to be a bit comforted by that

mylovelymonster · 08/07/2008 21:46

The GPs like to dabble in minor surgeries, bless'em. Also a good sign that it is likely to be on the surface of the tissues beneath the skin and a sebaceous cyst if they're whipping it out in the surgery. The nasty blighter will be sent for characterisation as a matter of course.
I wish you a speedy removal of anxiety and no lasting scar x

mummylin2495 · 09/07/2008 14:35

my dh had a huge lump on his thigh,he had it removed and it was only a fatty lump of tissue .didnt even have to stay in hospital ,was there for about 2hrs in total.

DorrisMcWhirter · 09/07/2008 15:33

Thank you mylovelymonster and mummylin. I'm pleased all the lumps turned out to be ok.

DH had a bad night, he said he kept having bad dreams about all the various situations we find ourselves in. Poor bloke. We had a massive chat about it all this morning and i think I put his mind to rest a little. He's also finding the Dd's a big release at the moment - don't think he's put our baby down for the last 2 weeks!
